2001 São Toméan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in São Tomé and Príncipe on 29 July 2001. They were the nation's third presidential elections since the introduction of multi-party politics in 1990. Incumbent Miguel Trovoada was constitutionally barred from participating in the election having served the maximum of two five year terms. The two top contenders for the position were Fradique de Menezes, a wealthy businessman, and Manuel Pinto da Costa, former President and founder of the former single-party, the MLSTP/PSD. The elections, deemed free and fair by international observers, were won in the first round by Menezes. He was sworn in as the third president of São Tomé and Príncipe on 3 September 2001. Fradique De Menezes
Fradique Bandeira Melo de Menezes (born 21 March 1942) is a São Toméan politician who was the third president of São Tomé and Príncipe from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2003 to 2011. Early life Menezes was born on the then Portuguese colony of São Tomé in 1942, the son of a Portuguese man and a local woman. He attended high school in Portugal. He then studied at the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada in Lisbon, Portugal and Free University of Brussels. Career Menezes is a businessman. He was Foreign Minister of São Tome and Príncipe from 1986 until 1987. Manuel Pinto da Costa (born 5 August 1937) is a São Tomé and Príncipe, Santomean economist and politician who served as the first president of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1975 to 1991. He again served as president from 2011 to 2016. Life and career Educated in East Germany, he is fluent in Portuguese language, Portuguese and German language, German. Until the early 1990s the MLSTP maintained extensive relations with Angola and the MPLA, with Pinto da Costa himself having enjoyed a friendly relationship with José Eduardo dos Santos, the President of Angola, extending back to when they were both young men. Miguel dos Anjos da Cunha Lisboa Trovoada (born 27 December 1936) is a São Toméan politician who was the Heads of Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, prime minister from 1975 to 1979 and second president of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1991 to 2001. On 16 July 2014, he was appointed the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). Prior to this, he was the executive secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission. Independent Democratic Action
The Independent Democratic Action () is a political party in São Tomé and Príncipe. It was established in 1994 by the then president Miguel Trovoada and is a politically centrist party. It took part in the 29 July 2001 presidential elections, in which its candidate, Fradique de Menezes, won 55.2% of the vote and was elected president. After the elections Fradique de Menezes joined a new party – the Force for Change Democratic Movement-Liberal Party. In the legislative election held on 3 March 2002, the Independent Democratic Action was the main party in the Uê Kédadji alliance, that won 16.2% of the popular vote and 8 out of 55 seats. It left this alliance and won in the 2006 election 11 out of 55 seats. Carlos Alberto Pires Tiny (15 August 1950 – 8 April 2022) was a São Toméan politician. He finished in third place (3.26%), well behind the winner, Fradique de Menezes (over 55%) in the 2001 presidential election. In the 2006 elections, he was candidate for the MLSTP-PSD party in 2006 and represented the constituency of Água Grande. In 2008, Tiny became the Minister of Foreign Affairs & Cooperation for São Toméan. Francisco Fortunato Pires (born 24 November 1948) is a São Toméan politician. He was President of the country's National Assembly from November 16, 1994 to April 18, 2002. He was born in the hamlet of Canga, today a neighborhood of Cruzeiro not far from Trindade. He was also Minister of Justice in the 1980s. After independence, he attended at the University of Lisbon in 1981 and the University of Havana in 1987. He was Minister of Justice and Public Administration from 1985 to 1991. From 1981 to 1993, he was also Santomean ambassador to Portrugal. He represented MLSTP-PSD for the district of Cantagalo, a party he campaigned from 1974 to the legislative elections in 1980.
