2001 Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2001 Big Sky Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 8–10 at the Matadome at California State University, Northridge in the Northridge, Los Angeles, Northridge neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Top-seeded hosts 2000–01 Cal State Northridge Matadors men's basketball team, Cal State Northridge defeated in the championship game, 73–58, to win their first, and only, Big Sky men's basketball tournament title (CSUN departed the Big Sky the following season). The Matadors, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, 2001 NCAA tournament. No other Big Sky members were invited this year. Format No new teams were added to the Big Sky prior to the 2000–01 season, leaving total membership at nine. No changes were made to the existing tournament format. Matadome
Premier America Credit Union Arena, formerly Matador Gymnasium, and formerly known by its nickname the Matadome, is a 2,500 seat, indoor multi-purpose stadium on the campus of California State University, Northridge in Northridge, California. The Matadome was renovated in 2014. With the renovation, the arena now has a capacity of 2,500. History and renovations The Matadome, unlike many other traditional stadia, is located within Redwood Hall, which hosts many kinesiology classes for Cal State Northridge. Contrary to the name, Redwood Hall, and by default the Matadome, is not a dome at all – the roof is flat. The Matadome was completed in 1962 and was officially opened on 30 November of the same year. Northridge, Los Angeles
Northridge is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles. The community is home to California State University, Northridge, and the Northridge Fashion Center. Originally named Zelzah by settlers in 1908, the community was renamed North Los Angeles in 1929 but the appellation sometimes caused confusion between North Hollywood and Los Angeles. 2000–01 Cal State Northridge Matadors Men's Basketball Team
The 2000–01 Cal State Northridge Matadors men's basketball team represented California State University, Northridge during the 2000–01 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Matadors, led by head coach Bobby Braswell, played their home games at the Matadome in Northridge, California as members of the Big Sky Conference.Cal State Northridge won the Big Sky regular season and Big Sky tournament titles, the latter earning them the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament the first appearance in program history. Bobby Braswell
Bobby Frederick Braswell (born October 5, 1962) is an American college basketball coach. He is an assistant coach for the men's basketball program at California State University, Long Beach. Braswell previously served as the men's head coach for his alma mater Cal State Northridge, being named the fourth head coach in Northridge's history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy. Coaching career After graduating from Cal State Northridge in 1985 (with a bachelor's degree in English), Braswell became a teacher and head basketball coach at Cleveland High School in Reseda, Los Angeles. During his four years there, Cleveland won two league titles, and reached the Los Angeles City Section title game in 1986 and 1987. Former NBA player Lucious Harris was a member of Braswell's teams at Cleveland. Braswell's success on the high school level elevated him to a position as assistant coach at Long Beach State.
