The 2000 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament took place March 3–6, 2000, at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. The 1999–2000 Iona Gaels men's basketball team represented Iona College during the 1999–2000 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Gaels, led second-year by head coach Jeff Ruland, played their home games at the Hynes Athletic Center and were members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Gaels finished second in the MAAC regular season standings, and would go on to win the MAAC Basketball tournament to receive an automatic bid to the 2000 NCAA tournament. Jeff Ruland
Jeffrey George Ruland (born December 16, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player and coach, best known for his tenure as a player in the NBA which saw him selected to two All-Star games. After playing college basketball for Iona, he started his professional career with FC Barcelona in the Liga ACB. Following his playing career, he coached the Iona Gaels men's basketball team and the UDC Firebirds men's college basketball team. Early life and collegiate career A , 280 lb center, Ruland went to Sachem High School in Suffolk County, New York. He was named to the inaugural McDonald's All-American team, which played in the 1977 Capital Classic. Tariq Kinte Kirksay (born September 7, 1979) is a French American former professional basketball player. He was born in the Bronx, New York, where he grew up. High school Kirksay played basketball at Rice High School, in New York City, New York. College Kirksay played college basketball at Iona College, with the Iona Gaels, from 1996 to 2000. He was a two-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) First Team selection, in the years 1999 and 2000. Professional career Kirksay won the Russian Cup with UNICS Kazan in 2009. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC, ) is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I. Its current 13 full members are located in five Northeastern states: Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York (state), New York. 2000 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 2000 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 16, 2000, and ended with the championship game on April 3 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the RCA Dome. A total of 63 games were played. Due to a string of upsets throughout the tournament, only one top-four seed advanced to the Final Four. The MAAC men's basketball tournament (popularly known as the MAAC Tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The tournament has been held every year since 1982, the MAAC's first season. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The MAAC did not receive its automatic bid from the NCAA until 1984.
