1999 Hereditary Peers' Elections
Elections of the excepted hereditary peers were held in October and November 1999, before the House of Lords Act 1999 excluded most hereditary peers from the membership of the House of Lords allowing Earl Marshal, Lord Great Chamberlain and 90 others to remain in the House. Until November 2002, vacancies among the elected hereditary peers were filled by hereditary peers who received most votes in the 1999 elections without being elected to remain. Since November 2002, by-elections have been held to fill vacancies. Election by the whole House 15 excepted hereditary peers were elected by the whole House in an election held from 27 to 28 October 1999. 1,115 members of the House were eligible to vote and 631 valid votes were cast. List Of Hereditary Peers Elected Under The House Of Lords Act 1999
This is a list of hereditary peers elected to serve in the House of Lords under the provisions of the House of Lords Act 1999 and the Standing Orders of the House of Lords. The Act excluded all hereditary peers who were not also life peers except for two holders of royal offices plus ninety other peers, to be chosen by the House. Thomas Edward Bridges, 2nd Baron Bridges, (27 November 1927 – 27 May 2017) was a British hereditary peer and diplomat. Early life Bridges was born on 27 November 1927 to Edward Bridges, later Cabinet Secretary. His grandfather was Robert Bridges, the Poet Laureate. He was educated at Eton College and New College, Oxford. Career He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1951. Following postings to, amongst other places, West Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow and Washington, D.C., he was HM Ambassador to Italy from 1983 to 1987. He sat as a crossbench member of the House of Lords from 1975, and was one of the ninety hereditary peers elected to remain under the House of Lords Act 1999 He was on leave of absence from March 2011 to May 2015. Colwyn Iestyn John Philipps, 3rd Viscount St Davids (30 January 1939 – 26 April 2009) was a British businessman, Conservative politician and writer on music. Besides his viscountcy, he also held the older titles of Baron Strange of Knockin (1299), Baron Hungerford (1426), and Baron de Moleyns (1445), & the Baronetcy of Picton Castle (1621). Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Jaffray Hynman Allenby, 3rd Viscount Allenby (20 April 1931 – 3 October 2014), was a British politician and hereditary peer. Early life He was the great-nephew of Edmund Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby, famed commander during the Second Boer War and the First World War. Geoffrey Russell, 4th Baron Ampthill
Geoffrey Denis Erskine Russell, 4th Baron Ampthill, (15 October 1921 – 23 April 2011), was a British hereditary peer and businessman, whose paternity and succession to the peerage were famously disputed in the " Ampthill baby case". His father, John Russell, 3rd Baron Ampthill, had petitioned to disclaim paternity whilst divorcing Russell's mother, Christabel Hulme Hart, in 1923, claiming non-consummation. The petition was rejected on appeal and Russell's mother was granted a declaration that he was legitimate. Educated at Stowe School, Russell served in the Irish Guards during the Second World War, being commissioned as a captain in 1941. He served with the Guards Armoured Division in France in 1944, where he was wounded, and in Norway in 1945. Biography Methuen was the third and youngest son of Anthony Methuen, 5th Baron Methuen, by his wife Grace Durning Holt, daughter of Sir Richard Durning Holt, Bt. Early life The son of the 2nd Baron Geddes and the former Enid Mary Butler, only child of Clarence Henry Butler, of Tenterden.
