1999 Victorian State Election
The 1999 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 18 September 1999, was for the 54th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect the 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The Liberal– National Coalition led by Jeff Kennett and Pat McNamara, which had held majority government since the 1996 election, lost 15 seats and its majority due mainly to a swing against it in rural and regional Victoria. The Labor Party, led by Steve Bracks, although also not having majority of the seats, took government due to support from three rural independents. They decided to back the Labor Party, which gave a working majority in the chamber to a Labor minority government. Bracks was sworn in as Premier of Victoria on 20 October 1999. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. Jenny Lindell
Jennifer Margaret Lindell (born 19 December 1953 in Springvale, Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian politician and former Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Lindell was educated at St Joseph's PS Springvale and Killester College, Springvale, and holds an Associate Diploma in Medical Radiations (RMIT). Before entering politics she worked for 20 years as a Medical Radiographer, and from 1990 to 1999 was an Electorate Officer at both state and national level. Lindell was elected as a State MP for the Carrum in 1999 and represented the Labor Party. During her time as an MP she has served as a member and later chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and on the Legislative Assembly Privileges Committee. Electoral District Of Carrum
The electoral district of Carrum is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It lies in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, covering Bangholme, Bonbeach, Carrum, Carrum Downs, Patterson Lakes, Sandhurst, Seaford and Skye. The seat was created in 1976 and traditionally has had a working class character and has been safe for the Labor Party. However, since the 1990s the area has been gentrifying and the seat was won by the Liberal Party against the trend at the 1996 election. However, the seat was narrowly recovered by Labor due to the Anti-Kennett swing in 1999 and the 'Brackslide' of 2002 reverted the seat to its original safe Labor status. Jacinta Marie Allan (born 19 September 1973) is an Australian politician serving as the 29th and current Deputy Premier of Victoria, deputy premier of Victoria since June 2022. Michael John (politician)
Michael John (29 April 1943 – 6 June 2003) was a Welsh-born Australian politician. He was born in Swansea to G. H. and Beryl John, and the family migrated to Australia in 1956. He graduated from Hamilton High School with Honours and was awarded the Myer and Commonwealth Scholarships to the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Law in 1965. He worked as a barrister and solicitor and is a partner in a law firm in Bendigo. In 1965 he married Belinda, with whom he had three daughters. He was a keen athlete, and competed in the final of the 1969 Stawell Gift. In 1985 John was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Bendigo East. Bendigo East is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It covers an area of covering the part of the city of Bendigo east of the Yungera railway line and surrounding rural areas to the north, east and south. It includes the Bendigo suburbs of East Bendigo, Epsom, Flora Hill, Junortoun, Kennington, Quarry Hill, Spring Gully, Strathdale, Strathfieldsaye and White Hills, and the surrounding towns of Axedale, Goornong, Huntly, Mandurang, Raywood and Sedgwick. Karen Overington
Karen Marie Overington (16 November 1951 – 11 August 2011) was an Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2010, representing the electorate of Ballarat West. Overington was born Karen Marie Brown in Ballarat, and attended Sacred Heart College. She worked as an electorate officer from 1984 to 1992, and as a Uniting Church outreach worker from 1994 to 1999. She had a lengthy career in local government before her election to parliament, serving as a councillor for the Borough of Sebastopol from 1982 until 1994, with a stint as mayor in 1990–1991. Geoffrey Paul Jenkins (born 5 March 1938) is an Australian former politician. He was born in Ballarat and attended Redan Primary School and Ballarat High School. In 1952 he took an apprenticeship with H. L. Pullen, but in 1958 underwent national service. On his return, as an electrical mechanic, he worked for a number of companies until becoming a self-employed contractor and company director in 1961. In 1985 he was elected to Sebastopol Borough Council, serving until 1993 (and as mayor from 1989 to 1990). Electoral District Of Ballarat West
The Electoral district of Ballarat West (initially spelt Ballaarat West) was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It existed from 1859–1927 and from 1992–2014. The original seat was created for the second election to the Legislative Assembly in 1859. In 1927, it was merged with Ballaarat East to form a single Ballaarat electorate. Its second implementation occurred in 1992, when it replaced Ballarat North. Unlike Ballarat East, which had a rural character, Ballarat West was mostly urban, and included much of Ballarat proper and its southern and western suburbs. Geoff Howard
Geoffrey Kemp Howard (born 8 November 1955) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, representing Ballarat East from 1999 to 2014, and Buninyong from 2014 to 2018. Life and work Howard was born at Geelong, Victoria, and attended public schools in Belmont and Geelong. He received a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1977 from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1979 from State College Rusden. He became a secondary school teacher at Kaniva in 1980, moving to Ballarat in 1982. He joined the Labor Party in 1987, and was elected to Ballarat City Council in 1989. He was mayor in 1993 and 1994, but left the council in 1994, only to return in 1996. Howard left the council in 1999 after he was preselected as the Labor candidate for the Liberal-held seat of Ballarat East prior to the 1999 state election.
