1997 US Open – Men's Singles
Patrick Rafter defeated Greg Rusedski in the final, 6–3, 6–2, 4–6, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 US Open. It was his maiden major title. Rafter became the first Australian to win the title since John Newcombe in 1973. It was Rusedski's first major final, dedicated in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales, who had died a week earlier in Paris. Patrick Michael Rafter (born 28 December 1972) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. He reached the top Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking on 26 July 1999. His career highlights include consecutive US Open titles in 1997 and 1998, consecutive runner-up appearances at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001, winning the 1999 Australian Open men's doubles tournament alongside Jonas Björkman, and winning two singles and two doubles ATP Masters titles. He became the first man in the Open Era to win Canada Masters, Cincinnati Masters and the US Open in the same year, which he achieved in 1998; this achievement has been dubbed the American Summer Slam. Marcelo Andrés Ríos Mayorga (; born 26 December 1975) is a Chilean former world No. 1 tennis player. Nicknamed ''"El Chino"'' ("The Chinese") and ''"El zurdo de Vitacura"'' ("The Lefty from Vitacura"), he became the first Latin American player to reach the top position on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles rankings in March 1998, holding the spot for six weeks. Marzio Martelli
Marzio Martelli (born 14 December 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. In 1996, Martelli reached the semi-finals of the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia, as a qualifier. En route he defeated second seed Alberto Berasategui. Martelli made the second round of two Grand Slams in 1997, at Wimbledon and the French Open. On the 1997 ATP Tour, he had his best result at the Bologna Outdoor tournament, beating two top 50 players on the way to a semi-final appearance. He was also a member of the Italian Davis Cup team which won against Spain that year in the quarter-finals of the World Group. Brett Andrew Steven (born 27 April 1969) is a former New Zealand tennis player. Steven began his tennis career at the age of 10 as a ball boy and by the age of 16 he participated at his first tournament. Steven turned professional in 1988 and won his first tour doubles title in 1991 at Newport, Rhode Island. Richard Peter Stanislav Krajicek ( cz, Krajíček; born 6 December 1971) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. In 1996, he won the men's singles title at Wimbledon, and remains the only Dutch player to have won a major singles title.
