1991 São Toméan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held for the first time in São Tomé and Príncipe on 3 March 1991, as previously the President had been elected by the National Assembly. Ultimately only one candidate, Miguel Trovoada, ran for office, and was elected unopposed. He was sworn in as the second president of São Tomé and Príncipe on 3 April. Candidates Three candidates stated their intention to participate in the contest; Miguel Trovoada, a former Prime Minister running as an independent (with the support of both the PCD-GR and CODO), Monso dos Santos of the Christian Democratic Front (FDC) and Guadalupe de Ceita, an independent candidate. Manuel Pinto da Costa, President since independence in 1975, declared that he would not be contesting the election and that he would retire from politics. Miguel Trovoada
Miguel dos Anjos da Cunha Lisboa Trovoada (born December 27, 1936) was the prime minister from 1975 to 1979 and second president of São Tomé and Príncipe 1991 to 2001. On 16 July 2014, he was appointed the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). Prior to this, he was the executive secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission. Background Born in the city of São Tomé, Trovoada attended secondary school in Angola before studying law at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. The Opposition Democratic Coalition () is a political party in São Tomé and Príncipe. At the last legislative elections, 3 March 2002, the party joined the Uê Kédadji alliance, that won 16.2% of the popular vote and 8 out of 55 seats. João Guadalupe Viegas de Ceita (born 4 February 1929) is a Santomean writer and a doctor, one of the national heroes. He was one of co-founders and ideologist of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe (MLSTP), a project for an independent São Tomé and Príncipe. Biography De Ceita was born in the city of São Tomé, once a colonial capital and then a federal capital. Guadalupe de Ceita started to work at the age of seven and helped his father who was a nurse in the plantations of the island. He finished his studies in Luanda and returned to the island where he attended Escola de Enfermagem de São Tomé (EEST); today it is the High Institute of Sciences and Health which is part of USTP (University of São Tomé and Príncipe). Manuel Pinto da Costa (born 5 August 1937) is a Santomean economist and politician who served as the first president of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1975 to 1991. He again served as president from 2011 to 2016. Life and career Educated in East Germany, he is fluent in Portuguese and German. Until the early 1990s the MLSTP maintained extensive relations with Angola and the MPLA, with Pinto da Costa himself having enjoyed a friendly relationship with José Eduardo dos Santos, the President of Angola, extending back to when they were both young men. In 1991, the legalisation of opposition political parties led to the country's first election under a democratic system.
