The 2nd World Championships in Athletics under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations were held in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy between August 28 and September 6, 1987. Billy Konchellah
Billy Komintai Konchellah (born 20 October 1961 in Kilgoris, Kenya) is a former 800 m runner who won two World Championship gold medals in Rome in 1987 and Tokyo in 1991. Career His victory in the 1991 final was unexpected. He sprinted past Paul Ereng and Jose Luiz Barbosa on the final straight. In 1993 Konchellah made an unexpected comeback when he won the B-race at the meeting in Zurich. He travelled to the World Championships in Stuttgart and looked strong in the heats and semi-finals. However, in the final he lacked the finishing kick that had earned him the gold medal in Tokyo two years before. The race was won by Paul Ruto and Konchellah finished third. Konchellah never won an Olympic medal as he suffered from asthma for long periods of his career which prevented him from entering the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. Hussein Ahmed Salah
Hussein Ahmed Salah (, ) is a Djiboutian former long-distance runner, best known for winning a bronze medal in the marathon at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He also won silver medals in this event at the 1987 and 1991 World Championships. In addition, he won the 1985 IAAF World Marathon Cup. He also came second in the New York Marathon in 1985, and won the Paris Marathon in 1986. His personal best time was 2:07:07, achieved in a 2nd-place finish in the Rotterdam Marathon in April 1988. Douglas Wakiihuri
Douglas Wakiihuri (born September 26, 1963, in Mombasa) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner, who won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome. No other male Kenyan runner had ever won the marathon at World Championships or Olympic Games until 2007, when Luke Kibet became a world champion. The following year, Wakiihuri won the silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, finishing behind Gelindo Bordin. In 1989 Wakiihuri won the London Marathon. In 1990 he won the New York Marathon. Wakiihuri was famous for wearing white gloves during races. He now runs a marathon fitness center and training school. Hansjörg Kunze (born 28 December 1959) is a German track and field athlete. He represented East Germany as a long distance runner. His biggest success was the bronze medal in the 5000 meter run at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. He represented Empor Rostock sport club. He had a notable win on 9 September 1981 in Rieti, Italy, when he set a European record in the 5000 meter run with a time of 13:10.40 and beat Kenyan Henry Rono who had dominated that season. With this win he also set himself apart from his longtime rival in East Germany, Werner Schildhauer. Paul Kipkoech
Paul Kipkoech (January 6, 1963 – March 16, 1995) was a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres and cross-country running. He became world champion over 10,000 m in 1987. Kipkoech was born in Kapsabet. In 1986 he ran the 3000 metres in 7:39.38 minutes, which was the third best time in the world that season, only behind Saïd Aouita and Sydney Maree. Jack Richard Buckner (born 22 September 1961) is a former British athlete. Athletics career Buckner was educated at St. Petroc's preparatory school in Bude, Cornwall where he won the Victor Ludorum trophy in 1975, as well as a scholarship to Worksop College in Nottinghamshire. He clocked 4:16.90 for 5th place at The English Schools Championships at 1500m as a 15-year-old. Three years later he won the National Junior 1500m title in 3:50.94, after an administrative blunder prevented him from competing in the English Schools' Championships of the same year. After leaving Worksop College, Buckner attended Loughborough University, where he read geography. He later completed an MBA degree. Saïd Aouita (; born November 2, 1959) is a former Moroccan track and field athlete. He is the only athlete in history to have won a medal in each of the 800 meters and 5000 meters at the Olympic games. James Calvin Spivey (born March 7, 1960, in Schiller Park, Illinois) is a former American middle-distance runner and Olympian. Spivey took up competitive running in Illinois where he became one of the best high school runners from his state. He was the 1982 NCAA DI men's 1500-meter champion with Indiana University. Spivey enjoyed a long Olympic career, in which he participated in the Olympic Summer Games in 1984, 1992, and 1996.
