1984 United States Presidential Election In The District Of Columbia
The 1984 United States presidential election in the District of Columbia was held on November 6, 1984 as part of the 1984 United States presidential election. Democratic candidate Walter Mondale won D.C. with 85% of the vote, giving him three electoral votes. In the general election, he only carried a total of 13 electoral votes, the other 10 coming from his home state of Minnesota. The incumbent Ronald Reagan won re-election in 1984, carrying 49 U.S. states. Mondale's victory in the District of Columbia was the largest out of any location, and was one of only two electoral jurisdictions to vote Democratic. In the midst of a Reagan landslide nationwide, the District weighed in 89.9% more Democratic than the national average, the furthest from the national average it has ever voted. Walter Mondale
Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale (January 5, 1928 – April 19, 2021) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 42nd vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. A U.S. senator from Minnesota from 1964 to 1976, he was the Democratic Party's nominee in the 1984 presidential election, but lost to incumbent Ronald Reagan in an Electoral College and popular vote landslide. Reagan won 49 states while Mondale carried his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia. Geraldine Ferarro
Geraldine Anne Ferraro (August 26, 1935 March 26, 2011) was an American politician, diplomat, and attorney. She served in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 to 1985, and was the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in the 1984 presidential election, running alongside Walter Mondale; this made her the first female vice-presidential nominee representing a major American political party. She was also a journalist, author, and businesswoman. Ferraro grew up in New York City and worked as a public school teacher before training as a lawyer. She joined the Queens County District Attorney's Office in 1974, heading the new Special Victims Bureau that dealt with sex crimes, child abuse, and domestic violence. The 1984 United States presidential election was the 50th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1984. Incumbent Republican President Ronald Reagan defeated Democratic former Vice President Walter Mondale, in a landslide, winning 525 electoral votes and 58.8 percent of the popular vote. No other candidate in history has matched Reagan's electoral vote total. This is the most recent US presidential election in which a candidate received over 500 electoral votes, as well as the most recent election in which both major party candidates are deceased, and the last time that a major party candidate failed to carry more than 100 electoral votes. The District of Columbia is a political division coterminous with Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. Since the enactment of the 23rd amendment to the Constitution in 1961, the district has participated in 15 presidential elections. The amendment states that it cannot have more electoral votes than the state with the smallest number of electors. Since then, it has been allocated three electoral votes in every presidential election. The Democratic Party has immense political strength in the district.
