1983 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 22 October 1983 to elect the 82 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a sixth consecutive term of office for the National Party under Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was the tenth election win for the National Party in Queensland since it first came to office in 1957. Background The election was triggered when a number of Liberal MLAs, including Welfare Services Minister Terry White, crossed the floor of the Parliament to support a Labor motion to create an Expenditure Review Committee. White was sacked from cabinet for supporting the motion. In response, he launched a party-room coup against Liberal leader and deputy premier Llewellyn Edwards and became Liberal leader with Angus Innes as his deputy. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Electoral District Of Ipswich
Ipswich is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district on the Brisbane River, west of Brisbane in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate includes Ipswich and its suburbs, south and east of the Bremer River, west of Bundamba Creek and north of the Cunningham Highway. History The electoral district of Town of Ipswich was one of the original 16 established in 1859, when Queensland became a separate colony. It returned 3 members. In the redistribution of 1872, its name was shortened to just "Ipswich" and it became a single member constituency, due to the creation of the electoral district of Bundamba. In the redistribution of 1878, it absorbed the electoral district of Bremer and became a dual-member constituency. Leisha Harvey
Leisha Teresa Harvey (née Piasecki, born 4 April 1947) is a former Australian politician. She was a National Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1983 to 1989, representing the electorate of Greenslopes. She served as Minister for Health in the government of Mike Ahern government from 1987 until her sacking in January 1989. She lost her seat at the election that December, and was not long out of Parliament when she was charged with numerous counts of misappropriation of public funds concerning her usage of her official credit card. After a high-profile trial in 1990 and subsequent conviction, she spent five months in prison and a further seven months in home detention. Bill Hewitt (politician)
William Douglas Hewitt (31 October 1930 – 23 November 2016) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Bill Hewitt did not have a happy childhood. His father was a World War I veteran who often told his children how he had seen 6,000 men killed in a day, which Hewitt said made him a "rather serious child". After completing primary school, he initially worked in Carricks Furniture Factory, which he hoped would lead to an apprenticeship, but didn't. Later, he worked as an office boy at Castlemaine Perkins and the company paid for him to study accounting at night school, after which he became an office manager and a business manager. Politics Hewitt joined the Liberal Party in 1950, becoming president of the Queensland Young Liberals. Greenslopes is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate is centred on the Brisbane suburb of Greenslopes and stretches north to parts of Norman Park and as far south as Mount Gravatt. Lindsay Hartwig
Lindsay Earle Hartwig (29 December 1919 – 2 April 1996) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Hartwig was a farmer and grazier by occupation and pioneered the first aerial sowing of pasture seed. Politics Hartwig began his political career as a councillor with the Shire of Monto (1961–1970) and was appointed chairman in 1964. In 1972, he was preselected for the safe National Party seat of Callide. He was elected at the 1972 election, winning re-election as a National in 1974, 1977 and 1980. In 1981, Hartwig was expelled from the National Party caucus by a vote of 33 to 2 by the party executive for repeated criticism of party president Sir Robert Sparkes. Brian John Cahill MBE (16 February 1931 – 8 March 2015) was an Australian radio and television presenter, newsreader and politician who worked first in radio, and then in television from 1959 until 1982. Beryce Ann Nelson, ''née'' Noble (born 10 January 1947) was an Australian politician. She was born in Brisbane to Arthur Lloyd Noble and Thelma Ann, ''née'' Kelso. She attended state schools at Toowoomba and Brisbane and studied radiography from 1965 to 1967, earning a diploma and winning the Kodak Student Prize for research. On 24 August 1968 she married John Arthur Nelson, with whom she had three children. Aspley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district is located in the north-eastern residential suburbs of Brisbane, encompassing Aspley, Bridgeman Downs and Carseldine, as well as parts of McDowall, Chermside West, Lawnton and Zillmere. It is now wholly within the local government area of Brisbane City Council, following the redistribution prior to the 2009 election. The electorate was created at the 1959 redistribution from the former electorate of Chermside. Tom Veivers
Thomas Robert Veivers (born 6 April 1937) is an Australian former cricketer, teacher, politician and public administrator who played in 21 cricket Test matches between 1963 and 1967. He is the great-uncle of Jack Wildermuth. Cricket career Veivers was an all-rounder who bowled right-arm off-spin and batted left-handed. Educated at Downlands College, in Toowoomba in southeastern Queensland, he attended the University of Queensland, whom he represented in club cricket. In 1955 for Downlands College against Gregory Terrace at the Brisbane Oval, he scored a 155.
