1937 British Columbia General Election
The 1937 British Columbia general election was the nineteenth general election in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on April 14, 1937, and held on June 1, 1937. The new legislature met for the first time on October 26, 1937. The governing Liberal Party, despite winning only 37% of the popular vote, benefited from the split in the vote between the Conservative Party and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and won a solid majority of the seats in the legislature. The rift in the Conservative Party that led to its decision not to nominate candidates in the 1933 election had been resolved, and the party was able to form the official opposition. The Conservatives and CCF each won about 29% of the vote, and only 8 seats and 7 seats, respectively. The remaining two seats were won by Labour and Independent candidates. The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is the deliberative assembly of the Parliament of British Columbia, in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Social Credit Party Of British Columbia
The British Columbia Social Credit Party, whose members are known as Socreds, was the governing provincial political party of British Columbia, Canada, for all but three years between the 1952 provincial election and the 1991 election. For four decades, the party dominated the British Columbian political scene, with the only break occurring between the 1972 and 1975 elections when the British Columbia New Democratic Party governed. Although founded as part of the Canadian social credit movement, promoting social credit policies of monetary reform, the BC Social Credit Party later discarded the ideology and became a political vehicle for fiscal conservatives and later social conservatives in British Columbia. The party essentially collapsed within one term of its 1991 defeat. Elmer Victor Finland
Elmer Victor Finland (July 8, 1894 – May 26, 1968) was a lawyer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Esquimalt in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1937 to 1945 as a Conservative. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, the son of George Robert Finland and Kate C. Finnerty, and was educated at McGill University and Stanford University. In 1921, he married Gladys L. MacDonald. Finland served as a lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force during World War I. Cariboo (provincial Electoral District)
Cariboo was one of the twelve original electoral districts created when British Columbia became a Canadian province in 1871. Roughly corresponding to the old colonial electoral administrative district of the same name, it was a three-member riding until the 1894 election, when it was reduced through reapportionment and became a two-member riding until the 1916 election, after which it has been a single-member riding. Louis LeBourdais
Louis Adelbert LeBourdais (June 26, 1888 – September 27, 1947) was a telegraph operator, life insurance agent and political figure in British Columbia, Canada. He represented Cariboo in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1937 to 1947 as a Liberal. He was born in 1888, the son of Adelbert LeBourdais and Eleanor Connick, and was educated in Clinton and New Westminster. Atlin (electoral District)
Atlin was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It made its first appearance on the hustings in the 10th provincial general election in 1903 and last appeared in the 34th provincial general election in 1986, after which it was merged with the Skeena riding and was succeeded by Bulkley Valley-Stikine. Demographics Political geography Always one of the province's largest ridings by area, it was always among the smallest in population, and is often cited as an example of a lack of proper representation-by-population in the BC political system. William James Asselstine
William James Asselstine (July 1, 1891 – August 21, 1973) was an engineer, gold miner and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Atlin from 1933 to 1945 as a Liberal and from 1956 to 1960 as a Social Credit member in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was born in Renfrew, Ontario in 1891, the son of Samuel Asselstine and Jessie Wilson, and was educated in Verona and Sydenham. In 1906, he married a Miss Ida Carr. Leslie Harvey Eyres
Leslie Harvey Eyres (August 3, 1892 – February 26, 1983) was a tire merchant and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Chilliwack in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1937 to 1952 as a Conservative. He was born in MacGregor, Manitoba, the son of Charles Eyres and Emily Turner, and was educated in MacGregor and Brandon. In 1922, Eyres married Adelia Sanford. He served three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Eyres was an alderman for Chilliwack City Council for 13 years. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Railways, Trade, Industry and Fisheries. Eyres was defeated when he ran for reelection to the provincial assembly in 1952. Chilliwack (electoral District)
Chilliwack has been a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia since 1916. Incorporating slightly different boundaries, it was the successor riding to the Chilliwhack riding the name of which was based on the older spelling of the name.
