1917 NSWRFL Season
The 1917 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the tenth season of Sydney's professional rugby league football club competition, Australia's first. Eight teams from across the city contested during the season and Balmain finished on top of the ladder to claim the premiership. Season summary After nine seasons with only nineteen wins and two draws from 115 matches, Western Suburbs finally made a significant impact on the league, finishing a respectable third behind the traditionally strong sides of Balmain and South Sydney. Their advance was almost entirely due to centre Herb Gilbert, who moved from Easts, Hull F.C. and South Sydney to add skill and knowledge to team crying out for guidance, besides scoring nine of the team's thirty-four tries. Balmain ultimately won their third consecutive premiership finishing eight points ahead of second placed South Sydney. Walter Haddock
Walter Bede Dally Haddock (1890–1972) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s. Playing career Walter 'Fisho' Haddock played 13 seasons of first grade rugby league in Sydney. He started his career at the Annandale club, playing four seasons between 1910 and 1913. He then shifted to the Newtown club for two seasons (1914–1915) before returning to Annandale for four more years between 1916 and 1920, and he became Annandale's longest serving first grade player. When the Annandale club folded in 1920, Haddock played out his career at Glebe for three years before retiring in 1923. Haddock played for New South Wales on four occasions in 1912 and 1913. He also represented Sydney(Metropolis) on three occasions in 1913,1914 and 1919. Wentworth Park
Wentworth Park is a park near the suburbs of Glebe and Ultimo in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The park contains several muti-purpose sporting pitches, cricket nets and a number of fitness installations. There is a playground in the southern area of the park and seating for picnics. Public toilets are next to the sports field. In the centre of the park is the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex. History Wentworth Park was initially a creek and swamp, known from the 1830s as Blackwattle Cove Swamp. Between the 1830s and 1860s, various toxic industries were established along the shore, including, in particular, abattoirs and boiling down works. The pollution from these works befouled the swamp so that, even after the removal of these establishments from the area, the local council lobbied to have the area in-filled because of the stench that continued to arise from the water and mud. Sydney Roosters
The Sydney Roosters are an Australian professional Rugby league, Rugby League Football Club based in the Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) and parts of inner Sydney. The club competes in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition.
