11th World Festival Of Youth And Students
The 11th World Festival of Youth and Students was held from 27 July to 3 August 1978 in Havana, capital city of Cuba. The festival was attended by 18,500 young people from 145 countries. The motto of the festival was "For Anti-imperialist Solidarity, Peace and Friendship". This was the first time the festival was held in the western hemisphere of the world. The proposal to hold the 11th festival in Cuba was supported at the 10th General Assembly of the World Federation of Democratic Youth held in November 1974 in Varna, Bulgaria. The 12th World Festival of Youth and Students was held from 27 July to 3 August 1985 in Moscow, capital city of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The festival was attended by 26,000 people from 157 countries. The slogan of the festival was "For anti-imperialist solidarity, peace and friendship". Objective The political goal of the festival was to show positive aspects of life in Soviet society. The political program of the festival included the establishment of a new international economic order, discussion of the problems of economic assistance to backward and developing countries, combating poverty and unemployment, and raising environmental issues. Anti-Soviet elements, just as before the 1980 Summer Olympics, were expelled from Moscow before the opening of the festival. History The festival has been held regularly since 1947 as an event of global youth solidarity for democracy and against war and imperialism. Its membership is voluntary and selective, and counts more than 600,000 active members. Its symbol shows the stylized faces of Julio Antonio Mella, Camilo Cienfuegos and Che Guevara.
