200 Metres
The 200 metres, or 200-meter dash, is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400-metre racetrack, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques is needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the '' stadion'' and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games. The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes predominantly rely on anaerobic energy system during the 200 m sprint. Similarly to other sprint distances, the 200 m begins from the starting blocks. When the sprinters adopt the 'set' position in the blocks they are able to adopt a more efficient starting posture and isometrically preload their muscles. This enables them to stride forwards more powerfully when the race begins and start faster. Nova Maree Peris (born 25 February 1971) is an Aboriginal Australian athlete and former politician. As part of the Australian women's field hockey (Hockeyroos) team at the 1996 Olympic Games, she was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal. She later switched sports to sprinting and went to the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 2000 Olympic Games. Kim Gevaert
Kim Gevaert (born 5 August 1978 in Leuven) is a former sprinter and Olympic champion from Belgium. Career Her closest brush with a world title came in running four hundredths of a second behind three-time champion Gail Devers at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics. At the next World Indoor Championships, in 2006, she won the bronze medal in a national record time of 7.11 seconds. On 9 August 2006 Gevaert won the 100 metres at the European Championships in 11.06 seconds. Two days later, she also won the final of the 200 metres, which was celebrated together with fellow Belgian athlete Tia Hellebaut, who had won gold in the high jump final only minutes before Kim Gevaert. Nanceen Perry
Nanceen Lavern Perry (born April 19, 1977, in Fairfield, Texas) is a former sprinter from the United States. She competed in the 4x100 meters relay in Sydney 2000, but her bronze medal was stripped after confessions of steroid doping by teammate Marion Jones. Seven relay teammates successfully appealed the IOC decision, and the medals were restored in July, 2010. Nanceen Perry did not participate in the appeal. Nonetheless, the overturn of the IOC decision restored Perry's bronze medal. Perry also ran in the 200 meters, but finished last in her semi-final round race. Perry ran for the University of Texas, where she holds the school record in the 200 meters. She was the 2000 American Indoor champion in the event. Wendy Seegers (née Hartman; born 28 February 1976) is a South African athlete who specialised in the sprinting events. She represented her country at the 1999 Indoor and 1999 Outdoor Championships. Seegers is currently a masters runner in Australia, setting many national W35 sprint records. Ran 55.72 on 17/12/15 for 400m to set national 35-39 Australian record. This adds to her records for 60m of 7.61, 100m of 12.01 and 200m of 24.42. On 3 March 2016 Seegers set a W40 Australian record of 24.52 for the 200m. She followed this with another Australian record of 12.18 for W40 100m. This is only 1 second outside her lifetime best.
