1998–99 Southampton F.C. Season
The 1998–99 Southampton F.C. season was the club's 98th season of competitive football, their 29th (and 21st consecutive) in the top flight of Football in England, English football, and their seventh in the FA Premier League. After a decent first season with Dave Jones (footballer, born 1956), Dave Jones in charge which saw the club finish 12th in the league table, the Saints had a disappointing second campaign with their new manager as they avoided relegation by just five points, finishing one place above the drop zone. The team's form outside the league was similarly poor, as they were eliminated at the first hurdle of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, League Cup. After losing striker Kevin Davies in a club record £7.5 million deal in the summer, Jones signed two replacements – James Beattie (footballer), James Beattie and Mark Hughes – as well as bringing in experienced winger Stuart Ripley. Football League Second Division
The Football League Second Division was the second level division in the English football league system between 1892 and 1992. Carlton Palmer
Carlton Lloyd Palmer (born 5 December 1965) is an English football manager, former footballer and football television pundit whose last management role was as manager of Grantham Town. As a player, he was a midfielder from 1984 to 2005, playing in the Premier League for Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City. Stig Johansen
Stig Johansen (born 13 June 1972) is a former Norwegian football striker. He made his debut for Bodø/Glimt in 1993 and played 70 games before he was signed by English Premiership side Southampton, in 1997. His spell at the English side was spent mostly in the reserves and rarely played for the Saints. Kevin Richardson (born 4 December 1962) is an English former footballer who made more than 500 appearances in the Football League and Premier League, playing for Everton, Watford, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Coventry City, Southampton, Barnsley and Blackpool, and also spent a season in La Liga with Real Sociedad. Marians Pahars (born 5 August 1976) is a Latvian professional football manager and a former player. As a player, he spent the majority of his career operating as a striker for English club Southampton, where he played in the Premier League and the Championship, the latter of which he played during his final season for the club. Hassan Kachloul (; born 19 February 1973) is a Moroccan former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Stuart Ripley
Stuart Edward Ripley (born 20 November 1967) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger from 1985 until 2002, notably in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers and Southampton. He was part of the Rovers squad that won the title in the 1994–95 season. Prior to this he had played just under 250 times in the Football League for Middlesbrough. James Scott Beattie (born 27 February 1978) is an English football coach and a former professional footballer who played as a striker. He is currently director of football at Southern League Premier Division South club AFC Totton. He was previously a part of Garry Monk's backroom staff, working with him at Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, Leeds United, Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday.
