1998–99 FC Basel Season
The 1998–99 Fussball Club Basel 1893 season was their 106th season since the club's foundation. Following their promotion in the 1993–94 season this was their fifth consecutive season in the highest tier of Swiss football. René C. Jäggi was the club's chairman for the third year. FC Basel played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium until 13 Dezember 1998. From 7 March 199 they played their games in the Stadion Schützenmatte while the new stadium was being built. Overview Pre-season Guy Mathez, who had taken over the coaching in January of that year, was appointed as the new trainer at the start of the season, but on 14 May 1999 he was sacked and was replaced by Marco Schällibaum (ad interim) until the end of the season. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss professional Association football, football club based in Basel, in the Basel-Stadt, Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been List of Swiss football champions, Swiss national champions 21 times, Swiss Cup winners 14 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Carlos Varela (Spanish Footballer)
Carlos Vila Varela (born 15 September 1977) is a Spanish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent almost his entire football career in Switzerland. Career Early years Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Varela played his youth football with local amateur club FC Vernier as he was scouted by Servette and he joined their youth department in 1993. He advanced from their M-17 team straight in to their first team, who played in the Swiss National League A, in the summer of 1995. As 18-year-old he only had two appearances in the 1995–96 Nationalliga A that season, but he also had appearances for their U-21 team. During the 1996–97 season he had 16 appearances for the first team and scored his first league goal. FC Winterthur
FC Winterthur is a Swiss football club based in Winterthur, Canton of Zürich. They play in the Swiss Super League, the first tier of Swiss football, and appeared regularly in the Nationalliga A during the 20th century. Their home is the Stadion Schützenwiese. History The club was founded in 1896 by students of the local school of engineering and following a fusion with two local teams, it was called ''Vereinigte Fussballclubs Winterthur'' between 1929 and 1946. They enjoyed their best success in the early part of the 20th century winning the Swiss Championship three times (in 1906, 1908 and 1917), before consecutive relegations in 1931 and 1934. Dario Zuffi
Dario Zuffi (born 7 December 1964) is a Swiss football coach and former international player. He is currently employed as assistant coach for FC Winterthur. Career Playing career Zuffi played his youth football with the local Winterthur team FC Töss. In 1983 he moved across town to join FC Winterthur's first team and signed his first professional contract for the 1983–84 Nationalliga A season. He prolonged the contract and he played with Winterthur for two seasons before he moved on. In the off-season before the 1985–86 Nationalliga A season Zuffi transferred to BSC Young Boys. From an early point in his career with YB, Zuffi showed tremendous skill and helped the team to win the Swiss Football Championship that season, personally scoring 15 goals. Jürgen Hartmann
Jürgen Hartmann (born 27 October 1962) is a German football coach and retired midfielder who played during the 1980s and 1990s. Career Hartmann was born in Lahr. He began his professional career at VfB Stuttgart in 1985 and went on to play over 150 matches for the club before he left to join Hamburger SV in 1991. He played for Hamburger SV for six years, making almost 200 appearances. Hartmann joined FC Basel's first team for their 1997–98 season under head coach Jörg Berger. After playing in five test games Hartmann played his domestic league debut for his new club in the away game in the Olympique de la Pontaise on 9 July 1997 as Basel were defeated 0–3 by Lausanne-Sport. Daniel Salvi
Daniel Roger Salvi (born 29 January 1972) is a Swiss former footballer who played in the 1990s. He played mainly in the position as defender or centre back and sometimes as defensive midfielder. Football career Salvi played youth football with Grasshopper Club, advancing to their first team in 1990 under head-coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. Salvi played his domestic league debut for his club in the home game at the Hardturm on 3 March 1990 as he was substituted in at half time. He scored his first goal for his club in the same game. Adrian Knup
Adrian Knup (born 2 July 1968) is a Swiss former professional footballer who played as a striker in the 1980s and 1990s. He was capped 49 times and scored 26 goals for the Switzerland national team between 1989 and 1996, including three games at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. From 2009 to 2017 he worked as the head coach of the youth sector at FC Basel. He was also the vice president of the club between 2012 and 2017. Benjamin Huggel
Benjamin "Beni" Huggel (born 7 July 1977) is a Swiss former footballer who played as a defensive midfielder for FC Basel in the Swiss Super League and for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. He won a total of twelve titles with Basel, seven League Championships and five Swiss Cup titles. He played in four Swiss Cup Finals (he missed one due to an injury) and scored a goal in each Final. For Frankfurt he played in the 2006 DFB-Pokal Final, but the team finished as runner-up. Huggel played 41 times as a Swiss international scoring two goals, the second of which being the 1000th goal in the history of the Swiss national team. Robson Vicente Gonçalves or simply Abedi (born 14 April 1979), is a Brazilian former footballer who played as attacking midfielder. Abedi played for Sion in the 1997–98 Nationalliga A season. He joined Basel's first team for their 1998–99 season under head coach Guy Mathez. After playing in one test game Abedi played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game in the Charmilles Stadium on 1 August 1998 as Basel lost 1–3 against Servette, being substituted in the 71st minute. He scored his first goal for his new team in the 84th minute of that match. Ahmed Ouattara (footballer)
Ahmed Ouattara (born 15 December 1969) is an Ivorian former footballer who played as a striker. He competed professionally, other than in his country, in Switzerland, Portugal, Spain and the United Arab Emirates. Club career Born in Abidjan, Ouattara started his career with Africa Sports National, remaining five years with the club after which he signed for FC Sion in Switzerland. He scored a career-best 17 goals in 30 games in the 1997–98 season, but his team could only rank seventh out of 12 in the Swiss Super League.
