1998 Big West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1998 Big West Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 6–8 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada. Utah State defeated in the championship game, 78–63, to obtain the second Big West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament championship in school history. This was the first time Utah State won the title since 1988. The Aggies participated in the 1998 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament after earning the conference's automatic bid. Lawlor Events Center
Lawlor Events Center is northern Nevada's largest multi-purpose arena. It is located in Reno, Nevada at the intersection of North Virginia Street and 15th Street on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. It is named after former athletic director, baseball, basketball and football coach Jake Lawlor. It was built in 1983 and has a capacity of 12,000 including 11,536 multi-purpose seats. Lawlor is home to the Nevada Wolf Pack basketball teams, and also hosts boxing, concerts, conferences, PBR events, rodeos, WWE and other entertainment events. 1997–98 Utah State Aggies Men's Basketball Team
The 1997–98 Utah State Aggies men's basketball team represented Utah State University in the 1997–98 college basketball season. This was head coach Larry Eustachy's 5th and final season at Utah State. The Aggies played their home games at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and were members of the Big West Conference. They finished the season 25–8, 13–3 to finish atop the conference standings in the East division. They also won the Big West tournament to earn an automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament as No. 13 seed in the West Region. Larry Eustachy
Larry Robert Eustachy (born December 1, 1955 in Alameda, California) is an American college basketball coach, most recently the head coach of the Colorado State Rams He was previously the head coach at Idaho and Eustachy was the AP Coach of the Year in 2000 after leading Iowa State to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. Coaching career Idaho At age 34, Eustachy became a head coach at Idaho in April 1990, succeeding Kermit Davis, who left the Palouse for Texas A&M after consecutive Big Sky titles and NCAA tournament appearances. He had been an assistant in Moscow for a season ( 1986–87) under Tim Floyd, and Eustachy's first-year salary as head coach was $52,500. In his third year, he led the Vandals to the regular season championship in 1993, but they lost the tourney title game at home. The 1998 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 12, 1998, and ended with the championship game on March 30, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. A total of 63 games were played. The Final Four consisted of Kentucky, making their third consecutive Final Four, Stanford, making their first appearance since their initial Final Four run in 1942, Utah, making their fourth Final Four and first since 1966, and North Carolina, who returned for a fourteenth overall time and third in four seasons. The 1997–98 Idaho Vandals men's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 1997–98 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.
