1998 Australian Open – Men's Singles
Petr Korda defeated Marcelo Ríos in the final, 6–2, 6–2, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1998 Australian Open. It was his first and only major title, becoming the first Czech player to win a major singles title (following the Czech Republic's independence from Czechoslovakia at the end of 1992). It was Ríos' only major final; he remains the only man to have held the world No. 1 singles ranking without ever winning a major singles title. Pete Sampras was the defending champion, but lost to Karol Kučera in the quarterfinals. This meant that no Americans made the semifinals at the event for the first time since 1990. Sébastien Grosjean
Sébastien René Grosjean (; born 29 May 1978) is a French tennis coach and a former professional player. Grosjean reached the semifinals at the 2001 Australian and French Opens, and at Wimbledon in 2003 and 2004. He finished eight consecutive seasons ranked in the top 30 (1999–2006), peaking at world No. 4 in October 2002. He is currently the director of the Open de Roanne. Career Juniors As a junior, Grosjean posted a 90-20 singles record and a 58-12 doubles record, winning the 1996 French Open boys' doubles. Doug Flach
Doug Flach (born August 10, 1970) is a former tennis player from the United States. Flach won two doubles titles during his career. The right-hander reached his highest individual ranking on the ATP Tour on March 21, 1994, when he reached World No. 108. He defeated Andre Agassi (seeded third) in the first round at Wimbledon in 1996 but lost in the third round. He also defeated Agassi in 1997 at Washington, D.C. André Rezende Sá (; born 6 May 1977) is a former Brazilian tennis player. In singles, he was a The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2002 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles, 2002. Christopher Wilkinson (born 5 January 1970) is a former tennis player from England. Career Born and bred in Southampton, Chris Wilkinson has achieved much in the world of tennis. But it could have been very different as his first passion was football in which he excelled for Southampton and had trials for Aston Villa and Coventry. Gérard Solvès
Gérard Solvès (born 7 April 1968) is a French tennis player, coach and director of the Tennis Club de Paris. Career Solvès arrived on the scene in 1993, making the quarterfinals in Munich and Gstaad. He defeated some good players in both tournaments, defeating world number 19 Henrik Holm at Munich and managing a win over Wally Masur in Gstaad. In 1997 he made the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Open and was also a semi-finalist in Chennai that year. Solvès did well at Chennai again in 1998, making it as far as the quarterfinals. Nicklas Kulti (born 22 April 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. He was born in Stockholm. Ionuţ "Ion" Moldovan (born 17 January 1978) is a former professional tennis player from Romania. He was Vice-President of the Romanian Tennis Federation from 2013 to 2015. Dirk Dier (born 16 February 1972) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. Career Dier, an under 12s and 14s national champion, was a semi finalist in the Orange Bowl. In 1990, he defeated Leander Paes to win the boys' singles event in the Australian Open and also finished runner-up in the juniors at Queen's that year.
