1997–98 Vancouver Grizzlies Season
The 1997–98 NBA season was the third season for the Vancouver Grizzlies in the National Basketball Association. After finishing with the worst record in their first two seasons, the Grizzlies received the fourth overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, and selected point guard Antonio Daniels out of Bowling Green State University. During the off-season, the team hired Brian Hill as their new head coach; Hill previously coached the Orlando Magic, and led them to the 1995 NBA Finals, where they lost in four straight games to the Houston Rockets. The team also acquired Otis Thorpe from the Detroit Pistons, acquired three-point specialist Sam Mack from the Houston Rockets, and acquired Tony Massenburg from the Boston Celtics. Brian Hill (basketball Coach)
Brian Alfred Hill (born September 19, 1947) is an American former professional basketball coach. Early life Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Hill graduated from Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange, New Jersey in 1965 and John F. Kennedy College in Nebraska in 1969 with a degree in physical education. Hill was a three-year starter on the Kennedy basketball team. Coaching career In 1970, Hill began his coaching career as head coach at Clifford Scott High School in his native East Orange, New Jersey. Hill then was an assistant coach at Montclair State College from 1972 to 1974. Hill began his tenure at Lehigh University as an assistant coach for one season before being promoted on April 9, 1975, to succeed Tom Pugliese who had resigned sixteen days prior on March 24. Otis Thorpe
Otis Henry Thorpe (born August 5, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player who played for several teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was an NBA All-Star in 1992 and won an NBA championship with the Houston Rockets in 1994. Early years Thorpe graduated in 1980 from Lake Worth Community High School in Florida. He played college ball at Providence College. He had the longest NBA career of any former Friars player. He ranks seventh all-time at the school in rebounds and was the school's first First-Team Big East player. During his tenure at Providence College he was also a two-time Honorable Mention All-America selection. Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Julius Shareef Abdur-Rahim (born December 11, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player who is the president of the NBA G League. Nicknamed Reef, he previously served as the director of player personnel for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the general manager of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' minor-league affiliate. Abdur-Rahim played both the forward and center positions during his career. He emerged as a prospect at Joseph Wheeler High School in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia. Midwest Division (NBA)
The Midwest Division was a division in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The division was created at the start of the 1970–71 season, when the league expanded from 14 to 17 teams with the addition of the Buffalo Braves, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trail Blazers. The league realigned itself into two conferences, the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference, with two divisions in each conference. The Midwest Division began with four inaugural members, the Chicago Bulls, the Detroit Pistons, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns. The Bulls and the Suns joined from the Western Division, while the Pistons and the Bucks joined from the Eastern Division. Doug West
Jeffery Douglas West (born May 27, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player who is an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A swingman from Villanova University, West was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 1989 NBA draft. Anthony Peeler
Anthony Eugene Peeler (born November 25, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player, having played for a number of National Basketball Association (NBA) teams from 1992 to 2005. He was most commonly known for his defense and athleticism. He later became an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Virginia Union University. Bobby Hurley
Robert Hurley (born June 28, 1971) is an American college basketball coach and former professional player who is the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils. He was previously the head coach at the University at Buffalo. As a college senior, he was a unanimous first-team All-America for the Duke Blue Devils, with whom he won consecutive national championships. He is the all-time leader in assists in NCAA basketball. Michael Smith (basketball, Born 1972)
Michael John Smith (born March 28, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. Nicknamed "the Animal", he played in seven seasons from 1994–2001 in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A 6'8" power forward from Providence College, Smith was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 1994 NBA draft. He would play for the Kings, Vancouver Grizzlies, and Washington Wizards, tallying 2,527 NBA career points and 3,193 NBA career rebounds. He also played with the Indiana Pacers during the 2003 preseason. On November 10, 1995, as a member of the Kings, Smith was involved in a physical altercation with Indiana Pacers forward Dale Davis. The 1997–98 NBA season was the 49th season for the Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association, and their 13th season in Sacramento, California. During the off-season, the Kings signed free agent Terry Dehere. The team decided to add youth to their roster with the addition of four rookies; Lawrence Funderburke out of Ohio State University, who was drafted by the Kings in the second round of the 1994 NBA draft, top draft pick Tariq Abdul-Wahad out of San José State University, second-round draft pick Anthony Johnson out of the College of Charleston, and undrafted rookie center Michael Stewart from the University of California. The 1997–98 NBA season was the 52nd season for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association. The Celtics received the third overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, and selected point guard Chauncey Billups from the University of Colorado, and also selected shooting guard Ron Mercer from the University of Kentucky with the sixth overall pick. Tony Massenburg
Tony Arnel Massenburg (born July 31, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player. Massenburg was on the active roster of 12 different teams, which was an NBA record shared with Joe Smith, Jim Jackson, Chucky Brown, and Ish Smith; until Ish played with the Denver Nuggets, his 13th team, in the 2022–23 season. In 2005, while on the San Antonio Spurs, Massenburg became the first player in NBA history to win a championship after playing for at least 12 different franchises.
