1997 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Martina Hingis defeated Jana Novotná in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1997 Wimbledon Championships. It was her second major singles title. At 16 years and 278 days old, Hingis was the youngest player to win a Wimbledon singles title since Lottie Dod in 1887. It was Novotná's second runner-up finish at Wimbledon. Steffi Graf was the two-time reigning champion, but did not compete due to injury. This marked the first Wimbledon appearance of future five-time champion Venus Williams. Martina Hingis (, ; born 30 September 1980) is a Swiss former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 209 weeks ( fifth-most of all time) and as the world No. 1 in women's doubles for 90 weeks, holding both No. 1 rankings simultaneously for 29 weeks. Irina Spîrlea (born 26 March 1974) is a retired tennis player from Romania who turned professional in 1990. She won four singles and six doubles titles. Spîrlea reached her career-high ranking on the WTA Tour on 13 October 1997, when she became No. 7 in the world. She retired in 2000. Anne Kremer (born 17 October 1975) is a Luxembourgish retired tennis player. She won two singles titles on the WTA Tour. On 29 July 2002, she achieved her best WTA ranking of world No. 18.
