The 1997 Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held in March. The tournament featured the league's ten teams, seeded based on their conference record. LIU Brooklyn won the championship, their second, and received the conference's automatic bid to the 1997 NCAA Tournament. Format The NEC Men's Basketball Tournament consisted of a ten-team playoff format with all games played at the venue of the higher seed. 1996–97 Long Island Blackbirds Men's Basketball Team
The 1996–97 Long Island Blackbirds men's basketball team represented Long Island University during the 1996–97 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Blackbirds, led by 2nd year head coach Ray Haskins, played their home games at the Athletic, Recreation & Wellness Center and were members of the Northeast Conference. They finished the season 21–9, 15–3 in NEC play to capture the regular season championship. They also won the NEC tournament to earn an automatic bid in the 1997 NCAA tournament where they lost in the opening round to Villanova. Charles Jones (basketball, Born 1975)
Charles Rahmel Jones (born July 17, 1975) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA), with the Chicago Bulls (NBA) & Los Angeles Clippers (NBA). Raised in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, Jones was one of two children of Charles and Cathy Jones and graduated from Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School in 1993. His brother Lamont Jones is also a basketball player. In 1997, Jones estimated to ''The New York Times'' that around 15 of his friends from Bedford-Stuyvesant were killed on the streets. He played at The Soul in the Hole in Brooklyn. Jones attended Rutgers University and Long Island University, before spending two seasons in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls (1998–99) and the Los Angeles Clippers (1999–2000). Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Northeast Conference (NEC). It has been held every year since the NEC was established in the 1981–82 season. The tournament is an eight-team single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The bracket is reseeded after the quarterfinals, with the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals. The tournament winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, NCAA basketball tournament. Robert Morris, which left the NEC in 2020 for the Horizon League, is the program that has won the most NEC Tournament Championships (9), followed by current NEC members LIU (6) and Fairleigh Dickinson (6) as well as Mount St. Mary's (also 6), which left the NEC in 2022 for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
