1997 Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1997 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament took place February 26–March 1, 1997, at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Virginia, the home of the Liberty Flames. For the fourth time in their school history, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers won the tournament, led by head coach Tom Conrad. The Buccaneers advanced to their first NCAA tournament in school history (the first three times they won the conference tournament, the conference did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.) As of 2023, this is Charleston Southern's only NCAA tournament appearance. Format All eight teams participated in the tournament, hosted at the Vines Center. Vines Center
The Vines Convocation Center, also known as simply The Vines Center, is a 9,547-seat multi-purpose arena in Lynchburg, Virginia. It was built in 1990 and was home to the Liberty University Flames (men's) and Lady Flames (women's) basketball teams from its opening until the adjacent Liberty Arena opened in 2020. The Vines Center features three practice courts (1.5 each for men's and women's basketball), four spacious locker rooms, a weight room, a training room, men's and women's basketball team rooms, a team dining room, basketball coaches offices, a built-in TV studio, a center-hung scoreboard and a suite atop the seating bowl. Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Big South Conference men's basketball tournament (popularly known as the Big South tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Big South Conference. The tournament has been held every year since 1986. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. However, the conference did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament from 1986 to 1990, and in 1995. Before the 1994-95 season, Campbell departed the Big South due to scheduling conflicts. This left the conference with just five teams having played at the Division I level for at least five years, short of the six such members required by the NCAA for a conference to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. Rolando Hourruitiner (born May 28, 1975) is a business professional and entrepreneur; focusing mainly in sports & entertainment, media, digital, mobile and hospitality. The Liberty Flames and Lady Flames are the athletics teams of Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Virginia, United States. They are a member of the NCAA Division I level in 20 sports.
