The 1996–97 Meistriliiga (ice hockey), Meistriliiga season was the seventh season of the Meistriliiga, the top level of ice hockey in Estonia. Five teams participated in the league, and Tartu Valk 494 won the championship. Meistriliiga (ice Hockey)
The Meistriliiga (EML), also known as the Unibet Hokiliiga for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier ice hockey league in Estonia. The league consists of six teams. There are 28 referees in the country who officiate at Estonian championship games in all age classes. The work of hockey referees is organized by the ref in chief of Estonian hockey referees Maksim Toode. The Estonian champion has the right to represent the country at the IIHF Continental Cup, Continental Cup of Hockey. History The league was formed in the 1990-91 season. Since 1945–46, Estonian teams had participated in the Estonian SSR Championship. Prior to the country's Occupation of the Baltic states, annexation and incorporation into the Soviet Union, the Estonian Championship had been contested in interwar Estonia from 1934 to 1940. Narva PSK () is a professional ice hockey team located in Narva, Estonia, which plays in the Unibet Hokiliiga, the top tier of ice hockey in Estonia. They play home games at the Narva Ice Hall. They are the most decorated team in Estonia. History "Krenholm" from Narva was one of the most decorated hockey clubs in Estonia. It first became champion in 1967. Before the collapse of the USSR, it was champion 8 times. It became champion 8 more times during the years of independence. Due to financial problems, the club was disbanded in 2010, but in 2011 it was recreated as "Narva PSK". In February 2016, it became champion of Estonia ahead of schedule. In March 2017, the team won gold medals again and in the autumn of the same year, they competed in the 2017–18 IIHF Continental Cup, where they were in the same group as HC Donbass of Ukraine, Polish side GKS Tychy and Latvian outfit HK Kurbads, but failed to pass the second round of qualification, finishing fourth in the group.
