1996–97 Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball Team
The 1996–97 Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team represented Georgetown University in the 1996–97 NCAA Division I college basketball season. John Thompson, coached them in his 25th season as head coach. Their home court was USAir Arena in Landover, Maryland. They were members of the Big East 7 Division of the Big East Conference, were the regular-season champions of the Big East 7 Division, and finished the season with a record of 20–10, 11–7 in Big East play. Their record earned them a bye in the first round of the 1997 Big East men's basketball tournament, and they advanced to the semifinals before losing to Boston College. Big East Conference (1979–2013)
The Big East Conference was a List of college athletic conferences, collegiate athletics conference that consisted of as many as 16 universities in the eastern half of the United States from 1979 to 2013. Jerome Williams (born May 10, 1973), nicknamed "Junkyard Dog" or "JYD", is an American former professional basketball player active in the NBA between 1996 and 2005. Williams played for the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and the New York Knicks. Career He was a star player on the Colonel Zadok A. Magruder High School, Magruder High School basketball team. National Invitation Tournament
The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is an annual men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Since 2023, all rounds of the tournament are played at various sites across the country which are selected annually. From its founding in 1938 to 2022, the semifinals and finals were always played at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City. Predating the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament by one year, the NIT was considered the most prestigious post-season showcase for college basketball before its status was superseded in the mid-1950s by the NCAA tournament. The Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball team is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Pittsburgh, often referred to as "Pitt", located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Victor Martin Page (born February 19, 1975) is an American former basketball player who once played for the Georgetown University Hoyas and Sioux Falls Skyforce. He holds the freshman scoring record of 34 points in a game, breaking Allen Iverson's record of 32 points. Biography Early years Page grew up in Barry Farm in Southeast D.C. Point Guard
The point guard (PG), also called the one or the point, is one of the Basketball positions, five positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position and is usually the shortest player on the court. Point guards are expected to control the pace of the game. They effectively "run" the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time. The UMass Minutemen basketball team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts, in NCAA Division I men's college basketball. Jahidi White (born February 19, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player who played in the NBA. Basketball career Jahidi White attended high school at Cardinal Ritter College Prep. While at Ritter, White teamed with future Duke University player Chris Carrawell, and ex-NBA player Loren Woods. He subsequently attended and played basketball at Georgetown University, where he played with Allen Iverson and Othella Harrington, two other future NBA players. He was drafted in 1998 in the 2nd round (43rd overall) by the Washington Wizards.
