1996–97 Derby County F.C. Season
The 1996–97 season was Derby County's first in the FA Premier League, following their promotion from the First Division the previous season. Season summary Back in the top flight after a five-year exile, Jim Smith's Derby County side never looked in any real danger of an immediate return to Division One, and their 12th-place finish in the final table was their highest final position in eight years. Young striker Dean Sturridge received many plaudits for his goalscoring exploits, which sparked talk of a £7 million transfer to Arsenal, but the move never happened. The highlight of the season was a 3–2 win against champions Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Paulo Wanchope scoring a "wonder goal" on his English league debut. Lionel Pickering
Lionel Victor Pickering (4 December 1931 – 2 September 2006) was an English businessman, best known as the owner of Derby County F.C. between 1991 and 2003. A self-made millionaire, he previously built up a free local newspaper business, making his fortune primarily from the advertising revenue it generated. Biography In 1991, Pickering purchased Derby County Football Club for just over £1 million from Robert Maxwell and invested heavily in players over the next two years, spending nearly £10 million. In January 1992, with Arthur Cox's low budget team just in touch with the leading pack, Pickering embarked on a spending increase, the biggest in the club's history, with the £1million signing of Marco Gabbiadini from Crystal Palace. Old Trafford
Old Trafford () is a football stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, and is the home of Manchester United. Sean Flynn (footballer)
Sean Michael Flynn (born 13 March 1968) is an English football coach and former professional player who played as a midfielder. Flynn played in the Premier League for Coventry City and Derby County, and in the Football League for Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Tranmere Rovers and Kidderminster Harriers. He then moved into non-league football with clubs including Evesham United, Redditch United, Bodmin Town and Falmouth Town. He was briefly player/manager of Mullion as well as holding various coaching roles at other clubs he has played for in recent years. Jacob Laursen
Jacob Thaysen-Laursen (born 6 October 1971) is a Danish former professional footballer who played as a defender. Laursen most notably played for English club Derby County and won the Danish Superliga championship with Silkesborg and Copenhagen. Christian Eduard Dailly (born 23 October 1973) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. Dailly started his professional career as a teenager, playing as a striker for Dundee United. He helped them win the 1993–94 Scottish Cup. Towards the end of his time with United, Dailly began playing as a centre-back. He moved to English Premier League club Derby County in 1996. Paul David Simpson (born 26 July 1966) is an English former professional footballer who is the assistant manager of the Jamaica senior national team. He has been a coach and manager at several English clubs and was manager of the England team that won the FIFA Under-20s World Cup in South Korea in 2017.
