The 1996 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on Monday 10 June 1996 by the office of the Governor-General. John Zillman
John William Zillman AO (born 28 July 1939) is an Australian meteorologist, and former President of the World Meteorological Organization and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). He was born and was educated in Brisbane, Queensland. Through his leadership in professional organizations and advisory groups, Zillman has contributed to shaping science and innovation policy in Australia. Margaret Mittelheuser
Margaret Helen Mittelheuser (1931—2013) was an Australian stockbroker. She was the first female stockbroker in Australia and one of the first female stockbrokers in the world. Margaret joined Ralph W. King and Yuill stockbrokers in July 1964. On Queensland Day in 2021, Mittelheuser was named jointly with her sister Cathryn Mittelheuser as one of Queensland Greats by the Queensland Government. Christobel Rosemary Mattingley (1931 – 1 June 2019) was an award-winning Australian author of books for children and adults. Her book ''Rummage'' won the Children's Book of the Year Award: Younger Readers and Children's Book of the Year Award: Picture Book in 1982. Bernie Kilgariff
Bernard Francis Kilgariff AM (30 September 1923 – 13 April 2010) was an Australian politician. He was one of the founders of the Country Liberal Party and served as a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly which included a stint as Deputy Majority Leader. He was elected to the Australian Senate in 1975, and initially sat with the National Country Party until 1979, before sitting with the Liberal Party for the rest of his federal political career. Early life Kilgariff was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and in 1929 arrived in Alice Springs (then called Stuart) with his family on one of the first Ghan trains from Adelaide. Patricia Kailis
Patricia Verne Kailis (19 August 1933 – 17 April 2020) was an Australian business woman, geneticist and neurologist noted for her work in genetic counseling for neurological and neuromuscular disorders. Trevor Hendy
Trevor Ronald Hendy, AM (born 7 August 1968) is a former Australian professional surf lifesaver. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hendy competed in Ironman(surf lifesaving) races, winning the Australian Championship six times and coming second on three occasions. Trevor was also a superb Malibu board paddler, winning multiple Australian Championships. He also won the Uncle Toby's Super Series four times. Fred Derek Osmond Fielding AM (14 August 1929 – 25 June 2014) was an Australian librarian and author. In 1951 Derek graduated from the Trinity College, Dublin. He was University Librarian at the University of Queensland from 1965 to 1994. In 1991, he received the HCL Anderson Award from the Australian Library and Information Association. Martin Ferguson (politician)
Martin John Ferguson (born 12 December 1953) is an Australian former Labor Party politician who was the Member of the House of Representatives for Batman from 1996 to 2013. He served as Minister for Resources and Energy and Minister for Tourism in the Rudd and Gillard Governments from 2007 to 2013. Before entering Parliament, Ferguson spent a long career as a trade unionist, being General Secretary of the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union from 1984 to 1990 and President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1990 to 1996. Mick Doohan
Michael Sydney Doohan (born 4 June 1965) is an Australian former Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion, who won five consecutive 500 cc World Championships. Biography Originally from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Doohan attended St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and Aspley State High School, Brisbane. He raced in Australian Superbikes in the late 1980s, and also won both races as Superbike World Championship visited Oran Park in as well as the second leg of the Japanese round held earlier in the year. Susanna De Vries
Susanna de Vries AM (born 6 October 1936) is an Australian historian, writer, and former academic. She has published more than twenty books, making her one of Queensland's most published authors. The majority of these detail the bravery and hardships experienced by Australian women during the war with female contributions to the arts and various pioneering women the other main subjects of her work. Harold Cogger
Harold George "Hal" Cogger (born 4 May 1935) is an Australian herpetologist. He was curator of reptiles and amphibians at the Australian Museum from 1960 to 1975, and Deputy Director of the museum from 1976 to 1995. He has written extensively on Australian herpetology, and was the first author to create a field guide for all Australian frogs and reptiles. Cogger was made an honorary Doctor of Science in 1997.
