1996 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship
The 1996 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship was the 58th annual NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship to determine the individual and team national champions of men's collegiate golf. The tournament was held at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee from May 29 to June 1, 1996. The team championship was won by the Arizona State Sun Devils who captured their second national championship by three strokes over the UNLV Rebels. The individual national championship was won by Tiger Woods from Stanford. Venue This was the first NCAA Division I men's golf championship hosted at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. Ooltewah ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. It is a community near Chattanooga. The population was 684 at the 2020 census. Ooltewah is an enclave in the city of Collegedale. History Ooltewah was the county seat of James County, a former Tennessee county that went bankrupt in 1919 and was subsequently incorporated into Hamilton County. The former James County Courthouse located in the square in downtown Ooltewah is the community's major landmark. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Texas Longhorns men's golf team has a strong golf tradition, dating back to their first season in 1927. Since then they have won national titles back-to-back in 1971 and 1972, again in 2012 and the most recent in 2022, and finished runner-up six other times (1949, 1983, 1989, 1994, 2016, 2019). Brad Elder
Bradley Ryan Elder (born March 17, 1975) is an American professional golfer who has played on the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour. Elder was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He got his start in golf from his father. Elder attended the University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas and was a member of the golf team. He won the Haskins Award for most outstanding collegiate golfer in 1997, his senior year. Elder turned professional and debuted on the Nike Tour in 1998. He won two events in that venue in 1999, which allowed him to move up to the PGA Tour. The NC State Wolfpack is the nickname of the athletic teams representing North Carolina State University.
