1993–94 S.L. Benfica Season
The 1993–94 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 90th season in existence and the club's 60th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup by winning previous Portuguese Cup. It covers the period between 1 July 1993 to 30 June 1994. The season was marked by the events in his pre-season, as the club only made three signings. More importantly, however, the club lost regular starter Paulo Sousa and common substitute António Pacheco to Sporting CP due to unpaid salaries. Expectations around Benfica were not high, as Sporting and Porto were deemed the main contenders. Jorge De Brito
Jorge Artur Rego de Brito ComIH ComM (7 November 1927 – 2 August 2006) was a Portuguese businessman, founder of Banco Intercontinental Português (BIP) and Brisa, who served as the 29th president of sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding João Santos. During Brito's term at Benfica, from 24 April 1992 to 7 January 1994, its football team won the Taça de Portugal in 1993. At the end of that year, during the following season, he resigned due to financial difficulties dating back to "Verão Quente" (Hot Summer), when Benfica did not sign new players and lost two players to Lisbon rivals Sporting, thus not completing his triennal term. He was succeeded by Manuel Damásio. Associate number 88, Brito was awarded with the Águia de Ouro (Golden Eagle) by Benfica on 14 December 1973, during the presidency of Duarte Borges Coutinho. The Primeira Liga (; English: Premier League, also written as Liga Portugal 1), also known as Liga Portugal Bwin for sponsorship reasons, is the top level of the Portuguese football league system. Organised and supervised by the Liga Portugal, it is contested by 18 teams since the 2014–15 season, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Liga Portugal 2 and replaced by the top-three non-reserve teams from this division. Founded in 1934 as Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão, it was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 until 1999, when it was changed to its current naming. O Clássico
O Clássico ("The Classic") is the name given in football to matches between Portuguese clubs S.L. Benfica and FC Porto. Originally, the term ''O Clássico'' only referred to games played in the league, but now tends to include matches that take place in other domestic competitions such as the Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Paulo Jorge dos Santos Futre (; born 28 February 1966) is a Portuguese former footballer who played mostly as a left winger. He is one of the greatest natural talents of the Portugal. A hat-trick or hat trick is the achievement of a generally positive feat three times in a match, or another achievement based on the number three. Origin The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Estádio José Alvalade (1956)
Estádio José Alvalade was a multi-purpose stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. The stadium was able to hold 52,411 people. It was inaugurated on 10 June 1956. Home venue of Sporting CP for 47 years, it was mostly used for football matches, but also athletics. It was named after Sporting founder José Alfredo Holtreman Roquette, known as ''José Alvalade'' after his family. José Alvalade borrowed money from his grandfather, the Viscount of Alvalade, in order to fund Sporting. It was closed in 2003, when the new Estádio José Alvalade opened. A winning streak, also known as a win streak or hot streak, is an uninterrupted sequence of success in games or competitions, commonly measured by at least 4 wins that are uninterrupted by losses or ties/draws.
