The 1992–93 season Aston Villa's 118th professional season, their 82nd season in top flight and their 6th consecutive season in the top tier. It also marked their debut campaign in the newly formed Premier League. Aston Villa spent most of the season challenging for the title, and were top of the league with six games left to play, but were eventually overhauled by manager Ron Atkinson's old club Manchester United F.C., Manchester United. Mo Johnston
Maurice John Giblin Johnston (born 13 April 1963) is a Scottish former football player and coach. Johnston, who played as a forward, started his senior football career with Partick Thistle in 1981. He moved to Watford in 1983, where he scored 23 league goals and helped them reach the 1984 FA Cup Final. In 1984 he joined Celtic and scored 72 goals in 128 matches, won the Scottish Cup in 1985 and the Scottish league championship in 1986. Johnston signed for Nantes in 1987. He returned to Glasgow with Rangers in 1989, becoming the second player to cross the Old Firm divide since World War II ( Alfie Conn was first) and the first open Catholic to play for Rangers since World War I. Ian Branfoot
Ian Grant Branfoot (born 26 January 1947) is an English former football player and manager. Born in Gateshead, he played as a full-back, and after starting at Gateshead joined Sheffield Wednesday, making his Football League debut in 1965. After 42 senior appearances for the club he left in 1969–70 for Doncaster Rovers. He made over 150 League appearances for Rovers, and after moving to Lincoln City in 1973–74, he went on to make over 150 league appearances for the Imps as well. Branfoot was manager of Reading from 31 January 1984 to 23 October 1989. He must rank as one of Reading's most successful managers, leading Reading to promotion from Division 4 to Division 3 in 1984 based on the good work of Maurice Evans, and then promotion from Division 3 to Division 2 as champions in 1986. Gavin Johnson (footballer)
Gavin Johnson (born 10 October 1970) is an English former professional footballer who played as a left-back or midfielder. Career Born in Stowmarket, Johnson started his career with nearby Ipswich Town, making his debut in a 2–0 win over Barnsley on 21 February 1989. He moved on to Luton Town in 1995, but was sold to Wigan Athletic for £15,000 in the same year. After three years at Wigan, he spent a season in Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic, before returning to East Anglia to join Colchester United in 1999. After being released by Colchester in 2005 he had a brief spell with Boston United, before spending a season with Northampton Town and then Oxford United. In 2007, he returned to Suffolk to play for Bury Town, before moving onto Walsham-le-Willows in 2010. Dalian Atkinson
Dalian Robert Atkinson (21 March 1968 – 15 August 2016) was an English professional footballer who played as a striker. During his club football career, he played in England for Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Manchester City, winning the Football League Cup at Villa in 1994 where he also played in the Premier League. He also played in Spain for Real Sociedad, in France for Metz, in Turkey for Fenerbahçe, in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ittihad, and in South Korea for Daejeon Hana Citizen and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He was capped once at England B level, scoring a goal in that single appearance. Atkinson died on 15 August 2016. He was near his father's house in Trench, Telford, where he had grown up.
