1992 WAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1992 Western Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 11–13 at Moby Arena at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Top-seeded BYU repeated as tournament champions by defeating UTEP in the championship game, 73–71, to clinch their second overall WAC men's tournament championship. Both teams shared the WAC regular season conference title. The Cougars, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1992 NCAA tournament. They were joined in the tournament by UTEP, who earned an at-large bid. Format Even though WAC membership remained fixed at nine, the tournament field dropped to eight, forcing the elimination of the play-in round game between the eighth- and ninth-seed teams. As such, only the top eight teams, again seeded based on regular season conference records, participated in the tournament, all entering the tournament into the quarterfinal round. Moby Arena
Moby Arena is an 8,083-seat basketball arena on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. The arena, officially known as the Colorado State Auditorium-Gymnasium, was opened on January 24, 1966, with a victory over New Mexico State. The arena was built to replace South College Gymnasium, which was built in 1926 and seated 1,500 people. Design and Name On the outside, the arena is a rounded rectangle over the indented lower level, with a hump-shaped roof arcing over the long sides of the building. Inside, the seating is much higher on the sidelines than in the endzones. However, the most recognizable features of the arena are the corner walls which divide the sidelines from the end zones, and feature large ram's horn patterns on each one, radiating out from the near corners. The 1991–92 BYU Cougars men's basketball team represented Brigham Young University in the 1991–92 basketball season. Led by head coach Roger Reid, the Cougars won their second consecutive WAC title, and made their second tournament appearance under Reid. Roger Reid (basketball)
Roger L. Reid (born August 3, 1946) is an American former college basketball coach who most recently guided the Southern Utah University (SUU) men's basketball team. He served as head coach at Brigham Young University (BYU) from 1989 to 1996 and assistant coach for the NBA's Phoenix Suns. He has also coached at the high school, junior college and international levels. In addition, he played for former NBA coach Dick Motta at Weber State University. High school and college Reid attended Springville High School in Springville, Utah and was an all-state performer in both baseball and basketball. He went on to play both sports at the College of Eastern Utah and was recognized as a junior college All-American in baseball. Reid concluded his collegiate playing days at Weber State earning all conference honors in baseball both seasons he played and was also a key player for coach Dick Motta's Big Sky Conference championship team in basketball. 1991–92 UTEP Miners Men's Basketball Team
The 1991–92 UTEP Miners men's basketball team represented the University of Texas at El Paso in the 1991–92 college basketball season. The team was led by head coach Don Haskins. The Miners finished 27–7 (12–4 in WAC), reached the finals of the WAC tournament, and gained an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 9 seed in the Midwest region. After defeating Evansville in the opening round, UTEP beat top-seeded Kansas to reach the Sweet Sixteen. The run ended there, as the Miners lost by two points to Cincinnati in the regional semifinal. To date, this is UTEP's deepest NCAA run since they won the national title in 1966 as Texas Western. 1992 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1992 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 19, 1992, and ended with the championship game on April 6 in Minneapolis. A total of 63 games were played. Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, defeated Michigan, coached by Steve Fisher, 71–51 to claim their second consecutive national championship. Bobby Hurley of Duke was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Michigan subsequently vacated its final two tournament games due to issues with the eligibility of Chris Webber found in the University of Michigan basketball scandal.
