1992–93 Snooker Season
The 1992–93 snooker season was a series of snooker tournaments played between August 1992 and May 1993. The following table outlines the results for Snooker world rankings, ranking, minor-ranking and the invitational events. New professional players The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association accepted its largest intake to date, 154 new players, bringing the total to 719 (excluding 27 billiards-only members). The new professionals included world amateur champion Noppadon Noppachorn, world under-21 champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins (who won the junior event at the 1991 World Masters), Indian amateur champion Yasin Merchant, the fifth-ranked women's player Tessa Davidson, and future multiple ranking event winners Dominic Dale, Stephen Lee (snooker player), Stephen Lee, Joe Perry (snooker player), Joe Perry and Mark Williams (snooker player), Mark Williams. Jimmy White
James Warren White (born 2 May 1962) is an English professional snooker player who has won ten ranking events. Nicknamed "The Whirlwind" because of his swift and attacking style of play, White has reached six World Snooker Championship finals during his career but finished runner-up on each occasion. He has won two of snooker's Triple Crown (snooker), Triple Crown events, the 1984 Masters (snooker), 1984 Masters and the 1992 UK Championship. White is a record four-time World Seniors Championship, World Seniors Champion, winning in 2010 World Seniors Championship, 2010, 2019 World Seniors Championship, 2019, 2020 World Seniors Championship, 2020 and 2023 World Seniors Championship, 2023. 1992 Indian Masters
The 1992 Gold Flake Indian Masters was an invitational non-ranking snooker tournament held in Delhi, India in August 1992. Four professionals entered the event, Steve Davis, Steve James, Willie Thorne and Peter Ebdon, joining two Indians better known for their prowess at billiards, Geet Sethi and Michael Ferreira, plus two leading lady players, Stacey Hillyard and Karen Corr. The group standings were decided on aggregate frames won rather than matches. James Wattana
James Wattana (; born January 17, 1970, as วัฒนา ภู่โอบอ้อม ''Wattana Pu-Ob-Orm'', then renamed รัชพล ภู่โอบอ้อม ''Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm'' in 2003) is a Thai former professional snooker player. A professional between 1989 and 2008, and from 2009 to 2020, Wattana reached his highest ranking position – world number 3 – for the 1994–95 season. He has won three ranking tournaments, the 1992 Strachan Open and the Thailand Open in 1994 and 1995, and has finished as the runner-up in a further five ranking events. He twice reached the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championship, in 1993 and 1997. When he was defeated in the semi-finals in 1993 by Jimmy White, it was only Wattana's second appearance in the final televised stages at the Crucible Theatre, his first being the previous year when he lost in the second round to the eventual winner Stephen Hendry. Neal Foulds
Neal Foulds (born 13 July 1963) is an English former professional snooker player and six-time tournament winner, including the 1986 International Open, the 1988 Dubai Masters and the 1992 Scottish Masters, as well as the invitational Pot Black in 1992. He was runner-up at the 1986 UK Championship and the 1987 British Open, and reached the semi-finals of three Masters tournaments and the 1987 World Championship. After his retirement, Foulds became a commentator for the BBC and is currently part of the presenting team for ITV and Eurosport. Career The son of snooker professional Geoff Foulds, he began playing the game at the age of 11 and by the early 1980s was already one of the strongest players in his area. Blackpool
Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. It is located on the Irish Sea coast of the Fylde peninsula, approximately north of Liverpool and west of Preston, Lancashire, Preston. Norbreck Castle Hotel
Norbreck Castle Hotel is a large seafront hotel on Queens Promenade, in the Norbreck area of Blackpool, Lancashire, England. The hotel has 480 bedrooms and 22 conference suites, including the Norcalympia Conference Centre. History Originally built as a large private country house in 1869, it was bought around the end of the 19th century by J. H. Shorrocks who used the house to entertain friends and colleagues at lavish weekend parties. 1992 Pot Black
The 1992 Pot Black was the second of the revived professional invitational snooker tournament and the 20th series altogether. It took place between 2 and 5 September 1992, and was broadcast in the autumn of the same year. The tournament was held in Blackpool, and featured sixteen professional players in a knock-out system. This year, the series had been changed into a "timeframe" system which players would play at least one or two frames of snooker against the clock (each show was at least 20 minutes), the final being longer. Broadcasts were shown on Mondays and Wednesdays and the series started at 15:00 on Monday 7 September 1992. Eamonn Holmes presented the series and Ted Lowe and Willie Thorne were the commentators with John Williams as referee. John Parrott
John Stephen Parrott (born 11 May 1964) is an English former professional snooker player who won the 1991 World Snooker Championship. He came to prominence in the mid to late 1980s, and remained within the top 16 of the world rankings for 14 consecutive seasons. Following his playing career, he became a snooker commentator and pundit. He twice reached the final of the World Snooker Championship. At the 1989 World Snooker Championship, he lost 3–18 to Steve Davis, the heaviest defeat in a world championship final in modern times. Two years later, however, he defeated Jimmy White in the final of the 1991 event. He also won against White later the same year, to win the 1991 UK Championship title.
