1991 Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1991 Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held in March. The tournament featured seven teams; two teams, Mount St. Mary's and Robert Morris, were ineligible to participate. Robert Morris was penalized by the NCAA for institutional misconduct. Saint Francis (PA) won the championship, their first, and as of 2022, only tournament title. They advanced to a play-in game against Fordham, which they won to advance to the 1991 NCAA tournament. Format The NEC Men's Basketball Tournament consisted of a seven-team playoff format with all games played at the venue of the higher seed. The first seed received a bye in the first round. DeGol Arena
DeGol Arena is a 3,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Loretto, Pennsylvania. It is home to the Saint Francis University Red Flash men's and women's basketball teams and the men's and women's volleyball teams. It opened in 1972 and The 1991 Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held there. It was renovated in 1994 and again in 2005; it can hold 3500 fans. The building was named after Bruno and Lena DeGol, the lead donors of the facelift project in 2005. The arena is the centerpiece of the Maurice Stokes Athletic Center, which was named in honor of Maurice Stokes, who played basketball at St Francis 1951-1955 and went on to a career as a pro in the NBA. 1990–91 Saint Francis Red Flash Men's Basketball Team
The 1990–91 Saint Francis Red Flash men's basketball team represented Saint Francis University during the 1990–91 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Red Flash, led by fourth-year head coach Jim Baron, played their home games at the DeGol Arena and were members of the Northeast Conference. They finished the season 24–8, 13–3 in NEC play to finish in a tie for first place. They won the Northeast Conference tournament, their first, to advance to a play-in game against Fordham, which they also won, to secure a bid to the NCAA tournament. The Red Flash fell in the opening round to Lute Olson's Arizona Wildcats. Until 2025, this is their only NCAA tournament appearance. Jim Baron
James Edward Baron (born March 20, 1954) is a retired American college basketball coach. He previously held the position of head coach at Saint Francis University, St. Bonaventure University, the University of Rhode Island and Canisius College. Playing career Baron lettered in basketball for four years (1973 to 1977) at St. Bonaventure University and helped St. Bonaventure win the 1977 National Invitation Tournament as a senior. Baron graduated from St. Bonaventure with a degree in physical education in 1977 and later earned a master's degree in counseling from the same institution in 1988. Coaching career In 1977, Baron began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York. Mike Iuzzolino
Michael Alan Iuzzolino (born January 22, 1968) is an American basketball coach and former player who is an assistant men's coach at Robert Morris University. He was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round (35th pick overall) of the 1991 NBA draft. Iuzzolino, a 5-foot 10 inch point guard, played two years in the National Basketball Association (NBA), both with the Mavericks. He averaged 9.0 points per game in his career. In 1993, he signed as a free agent with the Orlando Magic, but was waived. After his NBA career, Iuzzolino played professionally in Italy and Spain. Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Northeast Conference (NEC). It has been held every year since the NEC was established in the 1981–82 season. The tournament is an eight-team single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The bracket is reseeded after the quarterfinals, with the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals. The tournament winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, NCAA basketball tournament. 1991 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1991 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 14, 1991, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana. A total of 63 games were played. Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, won a rematch of the previous year's national final matchup against undefeated UNLV 79–77 in the semifinal, then won the national title with a 72–65 victory in the final game over Kansas, coached by Roy Williams. This was the first national championship game for Williams as a head coach. Kansas defeated Williams' mentor Dean Smith and North Carolina (where Williams later coached) in the semifinal.
