1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup
The 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup was the first edition of the Gold Cup, the soccer championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), and the eleventh overall CONCACAF tournament. The last time the CONCACAF Championship was held was 1971, from that point on the first-place finishers of World Cup qualifying were considered continental champions. The tournament was hosted by the United States and played in the Greater Los Angeles area of California at two venues: the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Bowl. The eight teams were broken up into two groups of four; the top two teams of each group would advance to the semifinals. The Gold Cup was won by the United States, who eliminated Mexico in the semi-finals match, and went on to beat Honduras on penalties after tying them in the final 0–0. Toronto Blizzard (1986–1993)
The second iteration of the Toronto Blizzard was a Canadian professional soccer team in Toronto, Ontario that competed in the Canadian Soccer League, National Soccer League, and the American Professional Soccer League. The club was formed shortly after the folding of the original team that coincided with the folding of the North American Soccer League. This edition of the club folded in 1993 after poor financial prospects and lack of attendance. Carl Fletcher (Canadian Soccer)
Carl Tadeus Fletcher (born 26 December 1971) is a former professional Canadian soccer defender who played in the Canadian Soccer League, USL A-League, and played at the international level appearing in several CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments and at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. Club career Fletcher began his professional career for the Toronto Blizzard of the Canadian Soccer League. He played for the Toronto Rockets in 1994, which was the club's only season of existence. He spent the 1996 indoor season with Toronto Shooting Stars of the National Professional Soccer League. When the indoor season ended he signed with Montreal Impact and played a total of 68 matches. In 1999, he signed a contract with Hampton Roads Mariners and played two years with the team. Fletcher returned to the Montreal Impact in April 2001. The Kitchener Spirit were a professional soccer team in Kitchener, Ontario that played in the Canadian Soccer League. The team debuted in the 1990 season as the Kitchener Spirit and were renamed the Kitchener Kickers in 1991. The club folded following the 1991 season. During their debut season, they set a league record for goals scored in a game with an 8–1 victory over the London Lasers. Peter Gilfillan
Peter Gilfillan (born 29 December 1965) is a former professional Canadian soccer defender. Club career Peter was drafted to the North American Soccer League by the Toronto Blizzard in 1983. He was a member of the Toronto Blizzard from 1983 to 1987 (NASL and CSL). In 1988 he played for the Hamilton Steelers in the Canadian Soccer League. After leaving Wilfrid Laurier University in 1990 he joined Ottawa Intrepid of the Canadian Soccer League. He also played for the Kitchener Spirit/Kickers and the North York Rockets in the CSL. Peter was selected Canadian University CIAU/CIS All Canadian All-star for all 4 years in University from 1986 to 1990. He worked for Umbro Soccer and Adidas Canada after retiring from the game. Montreal Supra was a Canadian professional soccer club based in Montreal, Quebec that played in the Canadian Soccer League from 1988 to 1992. History Montreal Supra joined the Canadian Soccer League as an expansion franchise for the league's second season in 1988. They were Montreal's first professional soccer team, since the NASL's Montreal Manic and CPSL's FC Inter-Montréal folded in 1983. It was created by an investment by O'Keefe Brewery, one of Canada's three largest breweries, as the main sponsor. Mark Stewart Watson (born 8 September 1970) is a Canadian former professional soccer player who works as Technical Director (GM) at Minnesota United FC. A former defender, Watson is the sixth most-capped player in the history of the Canada national team. Club career Watson spent 18 years as a professional soccer player. He spent three seasons with Watford FC of the English Championship from 1993 to 1995 and then joined Major League Soccer for its inaugural season in 1996.
