1991 Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1991 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament took place February 28 – March 2, 1991, at the Civic Center of Anderson in Anderson, South Carolina. For the second time in their school history, Coastal Carolina won the tournament, led by head coach Russ Bergman. The Chanticleers advanced to face Jackson State in a play-in game for the right to advance to the 1991 NCAA tournament. Coastal Carolina defeated Jackson State, 78-59, to secure the Big South Conference's first ever bid to the NCAA tournament (the conference tournament's winner did not receive an automatic bid from 1986-90), and their first tournament bid in school history. Civic Center Of Anderson
The Civic Center of Anderson is part of a larger entertainment complex in Anderson, South Carolina, that also features baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, an amphitheatre, a playground, and conference center. Together, the facility is known as the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center. Constructed in 1991, the Civic Center itself is used for multiple indoor sports, shows, and concerts, and was host to the Big South Conference men's basketball tournament in 1991 and 1992 Both the Clemson men's basketball team and women's basketball team played in Anderson in 2002 during the renovation of Littlejohn Coliseum. Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Big South Conference men's basketball tournament (popularly known as the Big South tournament) is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Big South Conference. The tournament has been held every year since 1986. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. However, the conference did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament from 1986 to 1990, and in 1995. Before the 1994-95 season, Campbell departed the Big South due to scheduling conflicts. This left the conference with just five teams having played at the Division I level for at least five years, short of the six such members required by the NCAA for a conference to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. Robert Dowdell (March 10, 1932 – January 23, 2018) was an American actor, best known for his role as Lieutenant Commander Chip Morton in the television series ''Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea''. Biography Dowdell was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, and later graduated Parker High School. He attended Wesleyan University and the University of Chicago, before enlisting in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. After discharging from the service, Dowdell took an interest in acting. It was suggested that he take lessons with Wynn Handman.
