1990 Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1990 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 3–5 at the Birmingham–Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. South Florida defeated in the championship game, 81–74, to win their first Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. The Bulls, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1990 NCAA tournament, their first appearance in the Division I tournament. They were joined in the tournament by regular season champions UAB, who received an at-large bid. Format There were no changes to the existing tournament format. All eight conference members were placed into the initial quarterfinal round and each team was seeded based on its regular season conference record. 1989–90 South Florida Bulls Men's Basketball Team
The 1989–90 South Florida Bulls men's basketball team represented the University of South Florida Bulls in the 1989–90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was the 19th season in school history. The team was coached by Bobby Paschal in his fourth year at the school, and USF played its home games in the USF Sun Dome. The Bulls finished the season 20–11, 9–5 in Sun Belt play, and won the Sun Belt tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – the first in school history. USF lost to Arizona in the first round. Bobby Paschal
Bobby Paschal (born October 22, 1941) is a retired college basketball coach. He was head coach of the South Florida Bulls team from 1986 to 1996, as well as the Southwestern Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns from 1978 to 1986. A native of Enterprise, Alabama, Paschal played college basketball at Chipola College and Stetson University in Florida. Following the close of his college career, he coached at the high school level at Ashford High School in Alabama and then Plant High School in Tampa. He then spent a year as an assistant at Livingston College (now the University of West Alabama) while obtaining a master's degree before moving to Florida Southern College. He moved to Southwestern Louisiana in 1974 and was elevated to head coach with the departure of Jim Hatfield. Over his career, Bobby Paschal was head coach of two NCAA Division I programs. The Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament has been played every year since the formation of the Sun Belt Conference for the 1976–77 academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. History Format The size and format of the Sun Belt tournament has varied widely since its establishment in 1976. The size of the conference has ranged between a minimum of six teams and as many as thirteen. Nonetheless, the tournament has consistently utilized a simple single-elimination style tournament. 1990 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1990 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of NCAA Division I men's college basketball. It began on March 15, 1990, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Denver, Colorado. A total of 63 games were played. UNLV, coached by Jerry Tarkanian, won the national title with a 103–73 victory in the final game over Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski. In doing so, UNLV set the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament record for largest margin of victory in a championship game. The 1989–90 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1989–90 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was head coach Gene Bartow's 12th season at UAB, and the Blazers played their home games at UAB Arena. They finished the season 22–9, 12–2 in Sun Belt play and lost in the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 10 seed in the East region. Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament
The Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament has been played every year since the 1982-83 academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. In 2007, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth, as Louisiana–Lafayette (regular season champ of the West Division) received an invite to the national tournament despite losing in the conference tournament final. The following year, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth again, as Middle Tennessee State received an invite to the national tournament. In 2010, it happened again, as Little Rock received an at-large bid, having entered the conference tourney as a #1 seed, before losing to Middle Tennessee in double overtime.
