1990 French Open – Men's Singles
Andrés Gómez defeated Andre Agassi in the final, 6–3, 2–6, 6–4, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1990 French Open. It was his first and only major singles title, becoming the first Ecuadorian to win a singles major. Michael Chang was the defending champion, but was defeated by Agassi in the quarterfinals. For the first time since the December 1977 Australian Open, no semifinalists at a major had previously won a major title. World No. 1 and three-time former champion Ivan Lendl elected to skip the tournament to prepare for Wimbledon, seeking to complete the career Grand Slam. Andrés Gómez
Andrés Gómez Santos (; born 27 February 1960) is an Ecuadorian former professional tennis player. He was ranked as high as world No. 4 in singles and world No. 1 in doubles. Gómez won 21 singles titles and 33 doubles titles during his career, including a singles major at the 1990 French Open, and two doubles majors at the 1986 US Open and the 1988 French Open. His son, Emilio Gómez, is a professional tennis player. His nephew Nicolás Lapentti was also a professional tennis player who reached a world ranking of No. 6, and another nephew, Roberto Quiroz, is currently pursuing a career in professional tennis. Andrew Sznajder
Andrew Sznajder (pronounced: shnigh-der) (born 25 May 1967) is a Canadian former professional tour tennis player. Sznajder achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 46 in September 1989. This was the highest any Canadian male was ranked in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals, ATP until Greg Rusedski made it to No. 41 (before becoming a British citizen; subsequently in February 2011, Milos Raonic reached World No. 37). Martin Střelba
Martin Střelba (born 22 March 1967) is a former professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. Career Střelba was the Czechoslovak junior champion in 1985. He reached the semi-finals of a Grand Prix event for the first time in 1988, in Prague. The following year he went one better and finished runner-up in Munich's BMW Open. His run to the final included wins over three top 20 players, Emilio Sánchez, Jonas Svensson and reigning Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg, the latter in straight sets. Sergi Bruguera i Torner (; born 16 January 1971) is a Spanish tennis coach and former professional player . He won consecutive men's singles titles at the French Open in 1993 and 1994, a silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in men's singles and reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 in August 1994. Bruguera is the only player to have a winning record against both Roger Federer and Pete Sampras. He won three of his five matches against Sampras: Bruguera leads 1–0 on hard court, 2–1 on clay, and Sampras leads 1–0 on carpet. Roberto Azar (born 21 March 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. Career Azar was runner-up at the San Marino Open in 1989. Goran Ivanišević
Goran Ivanišević (; born 13 September 1971) is a Croatian former professional tennis player and current coach. He was ranked world No. 2 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in July 1994. Ivanišević won 22 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including the 2001 Wimbledon Championships. Carl-Uwe Steeb (; born 1 September 1967) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. In his post-playing career he has served as a tennis administrator.
