1989 US Open – Men's Singles
Boris Becker defeated Ivan Lendl in the final, 7–6(7–2), 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 US Open. It was his first US Open title and fourth major title overall. Becker saved a match point en route to the title, against Derrick Rostagno in the second round by way of a lucky net cord. This was Lendl's eighth consecutive singles final appearance at the US Open; he was the first man in the Open Era to finish runner-up five times at the same major. Boris Franz Becker (; born 22 November 1967) is a German former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the List of ATP number 1 ranked players, world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Emilio Sánchez
Emilio Ángel Sánchez Vicario (; born 29 May 1965) is a Spanish former doubles world No. 1 tennis player. He won five Grand Slam doubles titles and the men's doubles silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games. Sánchez is the older brother of multiple Grand Slam winner Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, with whom he partnered to win the Hopman Cup in 1990. Andrew Sznajder (pronounced: shnigh-der) (born 25 May 1967) is a Canadian former professional tour tennis player. Sznajder achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 46 in September 1989.
