The 1989 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on Monday 12 June 1989 by the office of the Governor-General. The Birthday Honours were appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. Pat Brazil
Patrick Brazil (1930 – 28 June 2017) was an Australian senior public servant. His career included time serving as the head of the Attorney-General's Department (Australia), Attorney-General's Department between 1983 and 1989. Life and career Pat Brazil was born in Fortitude Valley, Queensland in 1930. He was educated in Ipswich, Queensland, Ipswich at a convent school, and later at the Christian Brothers College. He won a scholarship to study Arts and Law at the University of Queensland. Brazil moved to Canberra to join the Attorney-General's Department in August 1953. Between 1983 and 1989, Brazil was Departmental secretary, Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department. When he resigned from the role, he also resigned from the Australian Public Service. Brazil died on 28 June 2017. John Newcombe
John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors, he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles. He also contributed to five Davis Cup titles for Australia during an age when the Davis Cup was deemed as significant as the majors. June Mendoza
June Yvonne Mendoza, AO, OBE, RP, ROI, HonSWA (born 1924) is an Australian portrait painter, working mainly in oil. Early life June Mendoza was born in Melbourne, Australia. Her parents, John Morton and Dot (née Mendoza), were both musicians, performers and composers in violin and piano respectively, her younger brother Peter Mendoza (born 1927) was an actor most notably with JC Williamsons in Australia and repertory theatre in England. As a child she toured with her mother, working in small mime parts and crowd scenes for the opera, ballet, musicals and revue. During these tours she started sketching in her spare time. Brian Frank Martin
Brian Frank Martin (2 November 1936 – 24 April 2023) was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. He was appointed to that position on 26 February 1993 when the former Chief Justice Austin Asche took up appointment as Administrator of the Northern Territory. Chief Justice Martin was appointed a Judge of the Court in 1987 and, following his retirement, still assisted the Court as an Acting Judge having been appointed to that position in 2004. Margaret Mary Manion (born 7 March 1935) is an Australian art historian and curator recognised internationally for her scholarship on the art of the illuminated manuscript. She has published on Medieval and Renaissance liturgical and devotional works, in particular, on Books of Hours – the ''Wharncliffe Hours'', the ''Aspremont-Kievraing Hours'', the ''Très Riches Heures''. Isi Leibler
Isi Leibler (Hebrew: ; 9 October 1934 – 13 April 2021) was a Belgian-born Australian-Israeli international Jewish activist. Biography Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Leibler was brought to Australia by his parents as an infant just before the outbreak of World War II. Leibler served as president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and Chairman of the Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress. He was a leader in the global campaign on behalf of Soviet Jewry and played a role in the lead-up to Israeli diplomatic relations between India and China. Leibler and his wife moved to Israel in 1999, settling in Jerusalem. He wrote weekly columns in the Jerusalem Post, the Hebrew daily Israel Hayom, and on his blog Candidly Speaking from Jerusalem. Richard Kingsland
Sir Richard Kingsland, (19 October 1916 – 27 August 2012) was an Australian RAAF pilot known for being the youngest Australian group captain at age 29. He later became a senior public servant, heading the Departments of the Interior, Repatriation, and Veterans' Affairs. Biography Julius Allan Cohen was born in 1916. He later changed his name to Richard Kingsland, to avoid anti-semitism. Kingsland was sent to Morocco in 1940 to rescue two of Britain's most senior WWII leaders, Duff Cooper and John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort. Kingsland managed to rescue them from French headquarters with only two other men and managed to flee in a Seaplane. That same year, he and his crew were sent to bomb a major Japanese headquarters established in Rabaul, New Guinea. Gwen Harwood (née Gwendoline Nessie Foster, 8 June 19205 December 1995) was an Australian poet and librettist. Harwood is regarded as one of Australia's finest poets, publishing over 420 works, including 386 poems and 13 librettos. Stuart Francis Harris (born 14 March 1931) is a retired Australian senior public servant and academic. He was born in London, England. Early life Harris grew up in London, attending Tottenham Grammar School. In 1947, at age 16, he moved to Australia under the auspices of the Big Brother Movement, a scheme to facilitate young Britons to move to Australia and work on the land.
