1989 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Game
The 1989 NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game was the final round of the 1989 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. It determined the national champion for the 1988–89 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, and was contested by the Southeast Regional Champions, No. 3-seeded Michigan Wolverines of the Big Ten and the West Regional Champions, No. 3-seeded Seton Hall Pirates of the Big East. Both teams were seeking their first national title. The game was played on April 3, 1989, at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington. Michigan defeated Seton Hall, 80–79 in OT, to claim their first national championship in basketball. It was also the first title for interim head coach Steve Fisher. Big Ten Conference
The Big Ten Conference (stylized B1G, formerly the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference, among others) is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference in the United States. The Most Outstanding Player (MOP) is awarded to one player after the conclusion of the championship game of the NCAA Division I NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, men's and NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, women's basketball tournaments. The award is also often referred to as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, referencing the conclusion of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament#Final Four, Final Four semifinals and championship games. John Morton (born May 18, 1967) is a retired American professional basketball player and current assistant coach at Saint Peter's University. At a height of 6′3″ (1.91 m) and , he played at the point guard position. College playing career Morton played college basketball at Seton Hall University, with the Seton Hall Pirates, from 1985 to 1989. Stephen Bardo
Stephen Dean Bardo (born April 5, 1968) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 3 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently a college basketball analyst. Basketball career During his standout career at the University of Illinois, 6'5" Bardo scored 909 points and compiled 495 assists. He was part of the Flyin' Illini team that qualified for the 1989 NCAA men's basketball tournament Final Four. Lowell Hamilton (born May 3, 1966) is an American former basketball player. High school Hamilton was a dominant high school basketball player at Chicago's Providence St. Mel, where he led the Knights to four consecutive IHSA boys' sectional championships from 1982 to 1985, three consecutive ''"Elite-Eight"'' appearances from 1983 to 1985 as well as appearances in the ''"Final-Four"'' in 1984 and a state championship in 1985. In his four years of varsity basketball, Hamilton scored 165 points in 11 IHSA tournament finals games, averaging 15.0 points per game and was named to the all-tournament team at center in '83, '84 and '85. Kenneth R. Battle (born October 10, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player. High school career In 1984, Battle led Aurora West High School to third place in the Illinois High School Association Class AA state basketball tournament. John Crotty
John Kevin Crotty (born July 15, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'1" point guard from the University of Virginia, Crotty was undrafted, but played in 11 National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons from 1992 to 2003. Loy Vaught
Loy Stephen Vaught (born February 27, 1968) is an American former professional basketball player who spent ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), primarily with the Los Angeles Clippers. Vaught played at East Kentwood High School in Kentwood, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids, and helped lead the University of Michigan Wolverines to the 1989 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. Demetrius Calip (November 18, 1969 – February 5, 2023) was an American professional basketball player. Born in Flint, Michigan, he helped the University of Michigan Wolverines to the 1989 Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
