1989 Associate Members' Cup Final
The 1989 Associate Members' Cup Final, known as the Sherpa Van Trophy for sponsorship reasons, was the 6th final of the domestic association football, football cup competition for teams from the Football League Third Division, Third Division and Football League Fourth Division, Fourth Division. The final was played at Wembley Stadium (1923), Wembley Stadium, London on 28 May 1989, and was contested by Bolton Wanderers F.C., Bolton Wanderers and Torquay United F.C., Torquay United. Bolton won the match 4–1, with Julian Darby, Dean Crombie, Trevor Morgan (footballer), Trevor Morgan and Jeff Chandler (footballer, born 1959), Jeff Chandler scoring the goals for the winning team. 1988–89 Associate Members' Cup
The 1988–89 Associate Members' Cup (known as the 1988–89 Sherpa Van Trophy) was the eight staging of a secondary football league tournament, and the sixth staging of the Associate Members' Cup, a knock-out competition for English football clubs in the Football League Third Division, Third Division and the Football League Fourth Division, Fourth Division. The winners were Bolton Wanderers F.C., Bolton Wanderers and the runners-up were Torquay United F.C., Torquay United. The competition began on 21 November 1988 and ended with the final on 28 May 1989 at Wembley Stadium (1923), Wembley Stadium. Phil Brown (footballer Born 1959)
Philip Brown (born 30 May 1959) is an English former professional footballer and coach who was most recently manager of National League North club Kidderminster Harriers. As a player, Brown was a right-back who made over six hundred league appearances in an eighteen-year career, but never made it to the top flight. However, as a manager, he became the first to lead Hull City to the top division in their 104-year history, winning the Championship play-offs in 2008 after a 1–0 win against Bristol City at Wembley Stadium. James Anthony McNichol (born 9 June 1958) is a Scottish former professional footballer who is most noted for his career at Torquay United and Exeter City. He was capped by Scotland at U21 level. Playing career An apprentice at Ipswich Town, McNichol joined Luton Town in July 1976. Kenneth Richard Allen (born 12 January 1948) is an English retired professional football goalkeeper. Kenny Allen began his career as an amateur with Hartlepool, who he joined in August 1968 from non-league Tow Law Town, a side later to produce Chris Waddle. He played only 7 league games for Hartlepool, before leaving, turning up next at South African side Hellenic. In December 1972 he returned to England, signing for West Bromwich Albion, but left without appearing in their league side. He had a spell with Workington before joining Bath City in July 1973. Philip George Neal (born 20 February 1951) is an English retired footballer who played for Northampton Town, Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers as a full-back. He is regarded as one of the most successful English players of all time, having won eight First Division titles, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, four European Cups, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup during his eleven years at Liverpool. Steven James Thompson (born 2 November 1964) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He is the Head of Recruitment for National League side Oldham Athletic.
