1988 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Steffi Graf defeated six-time defending champion Martina Navratilova in a rematch of the previous year's final, 5–7, 6–2, 6–1 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1988 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first Wimbledon singles title and fourth major title overall. It was also Graf's third step towards completing the first, and so far only Golden Slam in the history of tennis. This marked the second of three years that Graf and Navratilova contested the Wimbledon final. The semifinal between Chris Evert and Navratilova marked the last time they faced each other in a major, with Navratilova extending her lead in their head-to-head rivalry at the majors to 14–8. She was ranked as the List of WTA number 1 ranked singles tennis players, world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for a record 377 weeks, and finished as the List of WTA number 1 ranked singles tennis players#Year-end No. 1 players, year-end No. 1 a record eight times. Katerina Georgieva Maleeva (; born 7 May 1969) is a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player. She won eleven singles and two doubles WTA Tour titles. Iwona Kuczyńska (born 22 February 1961) is a retired tennis player from Poland. Her highest WTA singles ranking was No. 64, reached on 12 October 1987, while her highest doubles ranking was No. 35, reached on 16 January 1989. Career On the WTA Tour, she won one doubles title in Filderstadt 1988, partnering with Martina Navratilova and reached the final two more times, in Pittsburgh 1983 and in San Diego 1984, both times partnering with Trey Lewis. Wendy Turnbull, (born 26 November 1952) is an Australian retired tennis player. During her career, she won nine Grand Slam titles, four of them in women's doubles and five of them in mixed doubles. She also was a three-time Grand Slam runner-up in singles and won 11 singles titles and 55 doubles titles. Career Turnbull turned professional in 1975. Sarah Loosemore (born 15 June 1971) is a retired professional tennis player from Wales. Loosemore was born in Cardiff to solicitor father John, and physiotherapist and tennis coach mother, Pam. She played on the WTA Tour from the late 1980s until mid 1990s, when she attended university. She was the youngest female British competitor in the main draw at Wimbledon at age 16 in 1988, where she got to the 2nd round. Mareen "Peanut" Louie-Harper (born Mareen Louie; August 15, 1960) is a retired American tennis player, born in San Francisco, California to Ron and Alice Louie.
