1988 (Archie Roach Album)
''1988'' (also known as Music Deli Presents Archie Roach 1988) is a compilation album by Australian singer song writer Archie Roach. ''1988'' is the second in a series of artist releases from the live archives of ABC Radio's Music Deli program. It captures some of the first ever recordings of young Indigenous songwriter Archie Roach. The majority of the album was recorded in 1988 while other tracks were recorded live at Melbourne Concert Hall when Roach supported Yothu Yindi in January 1992 and The "Christmas Eve" song with Paul Kelly (Australian musician), Paul Kelly was also recorded live in ABC studio in 1990. A bonus at the end of the CD is an interview with Archie Roach recorded on 1 March 1988, followed by a short follow up interview 20 years later recorded in September 2008. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010, the album was nominated for ARIA Award for Best World Music Album. Archie Roach
Archibald William Roach (8 January 1956 – 30 July 2022) was an Australian singer, songwriter and Aboriginal activist. Often referred to as "Uncle Archie", Roach was a Gunditjmara and Bundjalung elder who campaigned for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. His wife and musical partner was the singer Ruby Hunter (1955–2010). Roach first became known for the song "Took the Children Away", which featured on his debut solo album, '' Charcoal Lane'', in 1990. He toured around the globe, headlining and opening shows for Joan Armatrading, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Patti Smith. His work has been recognised by numerous nominations and awards, including a Deadly Award for a "Lifetime Contribution to Healing the Stolen Generations" in 2013. ''Journey'' is the fifth studio album by Australian singer songwriter Archie Roach. The album was the first studio album released by Roach on the Liberation Records label and was released in October 2007. Into The Bloodstream
''Into the Bloodstream'' is the sixth studio album by Australian singer songwriter Archie Roach. The album was released on 19 October 2012 and peaked at number 49 on the ARIA Charts in December 2012. The album deals with Roach losing his life partner Ruby Hunter in February 2010, and his own health issues including having a stroke, being diagnosed with cancer and having half a lung removed. In the liner notes, Roach says the album is "built on pain." Roach says "Pain can also bring about change in one's life for the better, we can choose to ignore the Pain until it becomes unbearable or we can do something. Yothu Yindi
Yothu Yindi ( Yolngu for "child and mother", pronounced ) are an Australian musical group with Aboriginal and '' balanda'' (non-Aboriginal) members, formed in 1986 as a merger of two bands formed in 1985 – a white rock group called the Swamp Jockeys and an unnamed Aboriginal folk group. The Aboriginal members came from Yolngu homelands near Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in Northern Territory's Arnhem Land. Founding members included Stuart Kellaway on bass guitar, Cal Williams on lead guitar, Andrew Belletty (drums), Witiyana Marika on ''manikay'' (traditional vocals), ''bilma'' (ironwood clapsticks) and dance, Milkayngu Mununggurr on ''yidaki'' (didgeridoo), Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu on keyboards, guitar and percussion, past lead singer Mandawuy Yunupingu and present Yirrnga Yunupingu on vocals and guitar. Paul Kelly (Australian Musician)
Paul Maurice Kelly (born 13 January 1955) is an Australian rock music singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has performed solo, and has led numerous groups, including the Dots, the Coloured Girls, and the Messengers. He has worked with other artists and groups, including associated projects Professor Ratbaggy and Stardust Five. Kelly's music style has ranged from bluegrass to studio-oriented dub reggae, but his core output straddles folk, rock and country. His lyrics capture the vastness of the culture and landscape of Australia by chronicling life about him for over 30 years. The ARIA Music Award for Best World Music Album, is an award presented within the Fine Arts Awards at the annual ARIA Music Awards. It was inaugurated in 1995 as Best Folk/World/Traditional Release. "Took the Children Away" is a song written and recorded by Australian singer Archie Roach. The song was released in September 1990 as his debut single. The song was included on Roach's debut studio album '' Charcoal Lane''. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1991, the song was nominated for ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist – Single. In 1991, "Took the Children Away" won Roach the Human Rights Achievement Award, the first time that the award had been bestowed on a songwriter.
