1988–89 NHL Season
The 1988–89 NHL season was the List of NHL seasons, 72nd Season (sports), season of the National Hockey League. The Calgary Flames won an all-Canadian Stanley Cup Finals against the Montreal Canadiens four games to two. This remains the last time two Canadian teams faced each other for the Stanley Cup. Entry draft The 1988 NHL entry draft was held on June 11, at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec. Mike Modano was selected first overall by the Minnesota North Stars. Arena changes The Los Angeles Kings' home arena, The Forum, became the first NHL arena to sell its naming rights, becoming the Great Western Forum as part of a deal with Great Western Bank (California), Great Western Savings & Loan that the team announced on December 5, 1988. Although the St. Louis Blues' home arena was named the Checkerdome from 1977 to 1983, Ralston Purina owned both the Blues and their arena during that time. ''La Soirée du hockey'' (literally translated to ''The Night of Hockey'') was the French language equivalent of the English Canadian CBC's NHL broadcasts ''Hockey Night in Canada'' produced by Radio-Canada, which targets on National Hockey League (NHL) broadcasts, usually Montreal Canadiens'. Similar to its English language counterpart, the show used " The Hockey Theme" as its theme song. The show ran from 1952 to 2004. Games covered ''La Soirée du hockey'' most frequently featured Montreal Canadiens games on Saturday evenings, usually in parallel with English-language broadcasts on CBC. St. Louis Arena (known as the Checkerdome from 1977 to 1983) was an indoor arena in St. Louis, Missouri. The country's second-largest indoor entertainment venue when it opened in 1929, it was home to the St. Louis Blues and other sports franchises. The Kia Forum, also known as Los Angeles Forum and formerly Great Western Forum, is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Inglewood, California, United States, adjacent to Los Angeles. Montreal Forum () is a historic building located facing Cabot Square, Montreal, Cabot Square in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
