1987–88 North Texas State Mean Green Men's Basketball Team
The 1987–88 North Texas State Mean Green men's basketball team (often referred to as "North Texas" or the "Mean Green") represented the University of North Texas as a member of the Southland Conference during the 1987–88 college basketball season. The team was led by head coach Jimmy Gales and played their home games at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas. After winning the conference regular season title, the Mean Green followed that success by winning the 1988 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament, Southland tournament to receive an automatic bid to the 1988 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, NCAA tournament. Making the school's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and playing as the No. 15 seed in the West region, the Mean Green were beaten by No. 2 seed 1987–88 North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team, North Carolina in the opening round. Davey Whitney Complex
Davey Whitney Complex is a 7,000-seat multi-purpose arena and physical education center in Lorman, Mississippi. It was built in 1975 and is home to the Alcorn State University Braves men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team. The Physical Education Complex was built at a cost of $3.5 million. The new facility added much-needed seating capacity and classroom space, as well as an Olympic-size swimming pool. The first game in the complex was the final game of the 1974–75 men's basketball season. Nicknamed the "Scalping Grounds", stylized later as the Scalpin' Grounds, it was renamed in 1993 after Davey Whitney, who coached the Braves from 1969 to 1989.
