1987–88 Birmingham City F.C. Season
The 1987–88 Football League season was Birmingham City Football Club's 85th in the Football League and their 35th in the Second Division. They finished in 19th position in the division, expanded for this season to 23 teams as part of a restructuring process, and again avoided relegation only by two points. They entered the 1987–88 FA Cup in the third round proper and lost in the fifth round to Nottingham Forest, and were beaten by Mansfield Town over two legs in the first round of the League Cup and by Derby County in the first round of the Full Members' Cup. Garry Pendrey
Garry James Sidney Pendrey (born 9 February 1949) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender, making 345 appearances in the Football League, including more than 300 for Birmingham City. After playing he went into coaching, as manager of Birmingham City, as assistant manager under Alan Buckley at Walsall and Graham Turner at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and as coach or assistant manager under Gordon Strachan at Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough. In 2012, Pendrey was one of seven former players elected to Birmingham City's Hall of Fame. Playing career Born in Birmingham, Pendrey spent his entire playing career in England. He signed for Birmingham City in 1965 as an apprentice defender, before agreeing professional terms in October 1966. Andy Kennedy (footballer Born 1964)
Andrew John Kennedy (born 8 October 1964) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a centre forward. Kennedy started his career with Rangers, and after making around 20 first-team appearances he spent time at Seiko (Hong Kong) and was then transferred to Birmingham City in March 1985. His goals helped ensure the club's promotion from the Second Division, and in 1985–86, his first full season, he was the club's leading scorer, but with only nine goals for a side which failed to avoid relegation. In 1987, he joined Sheffield United on loan whilst recovering from injury, and then moved to Blackburn Rovers, where he scored 25 goals in two seasons, followed by Watford between 1990 and 1992. Ian Handysides
Ian Robert Handysides (14 December 1962 – 17 August 1990) was an English footballer. Handysides was born in Jarrow. He began his footballing career when he joined Birmingham City on leaving school in 1979. A year later he made his first-team debut as a midfielder and by 1982 was a regular player in Birmingham's First Division side. By the turn of 1984, he had lost his place in the first team and was transferred to Walsall (in the Third Division) in hope of getting more first-team chances. He was a regular player for Walsall and within two years of joining, he returned to Birmingham. In the autumn of 1986, Handysides was loaned out to Wolverhampton Wanderers and scored twice in 11 Fourth Division fixtures.
