1987 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament
The 1987 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament was the sixth annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA women's collegiate soccer. The championship game was played again at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Massachusetts during December 1987. North Carolina defeated Massachusetts in the final, 1–0, to win their fifth national title. Coached by Anson Dorrance, the Tar Heels finished the season 23–0–1. This was the second of North Carolina's record nine consecutive national titles (1986–1994). The ''most outstanding offensive player'' was Michelle Akers from Central Florida, and the ''most outstanding defensive player'' was Debbie Belkin from Massachusetts. The 1987 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament was the 29th annual tournament organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the national champion of men's collegiate soccer among its Division I members in the United States. Clemson Tigers won their second national title, defeating San Diego State in the championship game, 2–0. The final match was played on December 6 at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina. Overtime (sports)
Overtime (OT) or extra time (ET) is an additional period of play to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament and replays are not allowed. The William & Mary Tribe women's soccer team represents the College of William & Mary in NCAA Division I college soccer. The team belongs to the Colonial Athletic Association and plays home games at Albert-Daly Field. The Tribe are currently led by Julie Cunningham Shackford, who has coached since 2018.
