1987 Australian Open – Men's Singles
Defending champion Stefan Edberg defeated Pat Cash in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 3–6, 5–7, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1987 Australian Open. It was his second major singles title. There was no Australian Open in 1986, due to the administrative changes to make the tournament the opening major of the year (as it had been before 1977). The 1987 championship therefore followed the 1985 tournament, held over a year earlier. This was the last edition of the tournament to be held on grass courts, as it would switch to hardcourts the following year. Seeds All seeds receive a bye into the second round. Stefan Edberg
Jan Stefan Edberg (; born 19 January 1966) is a Swedish former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in both men's singles and men's doubles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), one of two players in the Open Era to hold both positions (alongside John McEnroe). Edberg won 41 career singles titles and 18 doubles titles, including nine majors: six in singles and three in men's doubles. A major practitioner of the serve-and-volley style of tennis, Edberg also won the 1989 year-end championships, led Sweden to four Davis Cup titles, and won four Masters Series titles and four Championship Series titles. Johan Christiaan Kriek (born April 5, 1958) is a South African–American former professional tennis player. As a tennis player, he won two Australian Open titles and reached the semifinals at the French Open and US Open, as well as the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships. Kriek won 14 professional singles and eight doubles titles, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 7 in September 1984. Eddie Edwards (tennis)
Eddie Edwards (born 3 July 1956) is a retired professional tour tennis player. The right-handed Edwards was a tour regular from the mid-1970s to the end of 1987. He played in singles a total of 112 grand prix (including World Championship Tennis events) and 24 grand slam tournaments. His best results were on grass, reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1986 and winning the Adelaide grand prix event in 1985. Russell Simpson (born 22 February 1954) is a former tennis player from New Zealand, who won five doubles titles during his professional career. Amos Mansdorf (; born 20 October 1965) is an Israeli former professional tennis player. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 18 (achieved in November 1987), the highest ever for any male Israeli tennis player. His career-high doubles ranking was World No. 67 (May 1986). Danny Saltz (born July 30, 1961) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Career Saltz played collegiate tennis for the University of California, Los Angeles. His first Grand Slam appearance was at the 1981 US Open, where he lost in a straight sets loss to Bruce Manson, in a match which lasted just 20 games. Matt Anger
Matt Anger (born June 20, 1963) is an American former professional tennis player. He is now the head men's tennis coach at the University of Washington. Professional tennis career Anger grew up in Pleasanton, California, and played at Amador Valley High School. He went on to be named the national 16-and-under singles champion in 1979 and to win the 1981 junior Wimbledon boys' singles title, resulting in a No. 1 ranking in the world by Tennis Magazine. Kelly Graeme Evernden (born 21 September 1961) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. Evernden turned professional in 1985 and won his first tour doubles title in 1986 at Cologne. His first top-level singles title came in 1987 at Bristol. Wally Masur (; born 13 May 1963) is a tennis coach, television commentator, and former professional tennis player from Sydney, Australia. He reached the semifinals of the 1987 Australian Open and the 1993 US Open, achieving a career-high singles ranking of world No. 15 in October 1993. Ramesh Krishnan
Ramesh Krishnan (born 5 June 1961) is an Indian tennis coach and former professional tennis player. As a junior player in the late 1970s, he won the singles titles at both, Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals in the 1980s and was a part of the Indian team captained by Vijay Amritraj which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1987 against Sweden. Jakob Hlasek (; born 12 November 1964) is a Swiss former professional tennis player of Czech origin. He won a major doubles title at the 1992 French Open, partnering Marc Rosset.
