Ekstraklasa
(; meaning "Extra Class" in Polish), officially known as PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa due to its Sponsor (commercial), sponsorship by PKO Bank Polski, is a professional association football league in Poland and the highest level of the Polish football league system. Contested by 18 clubs, operating a system of promotion and relegation with the I liga, seasons start in July, and end in May or June the following year. Teams play a total of 34 games each. Games are played on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The winner of the qualifies for the Polish Super Cup. Since 2005, the league is operated by the S.A. (corporation), Spółka Akcyjna. Pogoń Szczecin Spółka Akcyjna, commonly referred to as Pogoń Szczecin (), is a Polish professional football club based in Szczecin, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, which plays in the Ekstraklasa, the top tier of the national football league system. History The club was founded by Poles from Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), who had been transferred west after the Soviet annexation of Poland's eastern territories in 1945. The founders of Pogoń Szczecin had previously been supporters of Pogoń Lwów and the colors of their new club reflect their old club. Polonia Bytom and Odra Opole were likewise founded or revived by the former inhabitants of Lwów. Krzysztof Baran (born 26 July 1960) is a Polish former professional footballer who played as a forward. Besides Poland, he has played in Greece. Club career Baran began his career with Gwardia Warsaw, a club for whom he would play several seasons in the Polish Ekstraklasa. He had a spell with Larissa in the Alpha Ethniki. Marek Sebastian Leśniak (born 29 February 1964) is a Polish former professional footballer who played as a striker. A prolific goalscorer, he was successful in his country in the 1980s, and then had a career in Germany which spanned nearly 20 years, broken by a half-year stint in Switzerland. In 1993, he won the Polish Footballer of the Year Award presented by the '' Piłka Nożna'' football weekly. Career Leśniak was born in Goleniów. He started his professional career with Pogoń Szczecin, topping the Ekstraklasa goal charts in 1986–87, for a final runner-up position. In 1988, he moved abroad, with German side Bayer Leverkusen, starting his stint of well by scoring three Bundesliga goals in his first six games. After a couple of solid seasons, Leśniak lost his importance in the side after the arrival of Ulf Kirsten, eventually leaving in 1992 to SG Wattenscheid 09, totalling 25 goals in three seasons. Jan Urban (; born 14 May 1962) is a Polish professional football manager and former player who played as a striker. He was most recently in charge of Ekstraklasa club Górnik Zabrze. His professional career was closely associated to Górnik Zabrze and Osasuna, and he also coached and worked with the latter club in various capacities. Urban represented Poland at the 1986 World Cup. Playing career Club Urban was born in Jaworzno, being one of six children in an underprivileged mining family. In his country he played for Zagłębie Sosnowiec and Górnik Zabrze, winning three Ekstraklasa championships in a row with the latter to which he contributed with a combined 38 goals, including a career-best 17 in 1987–88. In the summer of 1989, Urban moved to Spain and joined CA Osasuna, going on to be one of the Navarre team's most important players of the following decade. Jan Furtok
Jan Furtok (9 March 1962 – 26 November 2024) was a Polish professional footballer who played as a striker. Regarded as the greatest player in GKS Katowice's history, he is the club's all-time best goalscorer. Career Born in Katowice, Furtok spent the early and latter parts of his career playing for his hometown club GKS Katowice, with a seven-year stint in (West) German clubs Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt in-between. With GKS, he won the 1985–86 Polish Cup, the club's first major domestic achievement. He then led the Silesian side to third-place and second-place finishes in the 1986–87 and 1987–88 league campaigns, accordingly. With 122 goals in 299 appearances across all competitions, he is the best goalscorer in GKS Katowice's history. GKS retired the number 9 in honour of Furtok's service to the club. 1988–89 UEFA Cup
The 1988–89 UEFA Cup was the 18th season of the UEFA Cup, the secondary club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The final was played over two legs at the Stadio San Paolo, Naples, Italy, and at the Neckarstadion, Stuttgart, Germany. The competition was won by Napoli of Italy, who defeated Stuttgart of Germany by an aggregate result of 5–4 to claim their only major European title.
