1986–87 Auburn Tigers Men's Basketball Team
The 1986–87 Auburn Tigers men's basketball team represented Auburn University in the 1986–87 college basketball season. The team's head coach was Sonny Smith, who was in his ninth season at Auburn. The team played their home games at Memorial Coliseum in Auburn, Alabama. They finished the season 18–13, 9–9 in SEC play. They defeated Kentucky to advance to the semifinals of the SEC tournament where they lost to Alabama. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated San Diego to advance to the Second Round where they lost to Indiana. The team lost Chuck Person to graduation and the NBA, and tried to offset the loss with sophomore transfer Aundrae Davis from West Virginia, but Davis was dismissed by coach Smith late in the season for violation of team rules. Sonny Smith
Charles H. "Sonny" Smith (born November 15, 1936) is an American former college basketball coach. Originally from Roan Mountain, Tennessee, Smith served as a head coach for 22 seasons. Best known as the head coach at Auburn from 1978 to 1989, he also coached at East Tennessee State (1976–1978) and VCU (1989–1998). Smith won the 1985 SEC tournament championship while at Auburn, and won both the CAA regular season and tournament titles in 1996 while at VCU. He made six NCAA tournament appearances as a head coach, five at Auburn and one at VCU. Smith was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Jefferson Pilot Sports
Raycom Sports is a Charlotte, North Carolina–based producer of sports television programs owned by Gray Media. It was founded in 1979 by husband and wife, Rick and Dee Ray. In the 1980s, Raycom Sports established a prominent joint venture with Jefferson-Pilot Communications which made them partners on the main Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) college basketball package. Raycom was acquired in 1994 by Ellis Communications. Two years later, Ellis was acquired by a group led by Retirement Systems of Alabama, who renamed the entire company Raycom Media to build upon the awareness of Raycom Sports. The company would be acquired by Gray in 2019. Chris Morris (basketball)
Christopher Vernard Morris (born January 20, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player. In his 11-season (1988–1999) National Basketball Association (NBA) career, the 6'8" small forward played for the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns. He is a graduate of Atlanta's Douglass High School where his jersey has been retired, and played collegiately for the Auburn Tigers. He scored 8,184 total points in his NBA career. Chuck Person
Chuck Connors Person (born June 28, 1964) is an American former basketball player and coach. Person played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was the 1987 NBA Rookie of the Year. Person played college basketball for the Auburn Tigers and was selected fourth overall in the 1986 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers, for whom he played six seasons. He also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets and Seattle SuperSonics.
