1986 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Four-time defending champion Martina Navratilova defeated Hana Mandlíková in the final, 7–6(7–1), 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1986 Wimbledon Championships. It was her seventh Wimbledon singles title and 14th major singles title overall. For the third time in her career, Navratilova did not lose a set during the tournament. Mandlíková was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam. This marked the first Wimbledon appearance of future champion Jana Novotná. She was defeated by Susan Mascarin in the first round. Stephanie Rehe (born November 5, 1969) is an American former tennis player. She played on the WTA Tour between 1985 and 1993, won five singles and two doubles titles, and reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 10, in March 1989. Career A successful amateur player, Rehe was ranked No. 1 in every age group as a junior (12s, 14s, 16s, 18s). She was the first player to receive a dual No. 1 ranking in 14s and 16s (1983). Kristin Kinney McDonald (born August 27, 1959) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Kinney grew up in Connecticut and attended Princeton University before turning professional. In addition to tennis she also excelled at squash while at Princeton, earning All-Ivy selection for both sports. Jane Forman (born January 21, 1962) is an American former professional tennis player. She was born in Providence, in Rhode Island. Forman played college tennis with Clemson University in the early 1980s. She was a three-time singles All-American for Clemson, and she was named ACC Player of the Year twice. Eva Pfaff (born 10 February 1961) is a German former professional tennis player. Career During her career, she won one singles title and nine doubles titles on the WTA Tour. Her peak world rankings in the sport were 17th in singles (in 1983) and 16th in doubles (1988). Bettina Bunge (born 13 June 1963) is a retired German tennis player. Born in Adliswil, Switzerland, she was part of a large group of successful German players in the 1980s, which also included Steffi Graf, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Sylvia Hanika, and Eva Pfaff. Ronni Reis (sometimes spelled Ronnie Reis; also Ronni Reis-Bernstein) (born May 10, 1966) is an American former tennis player. Reis won three gold medals at the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel, the doubles bronze medal at the 1986 Goodwill Games, and the doubles gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games.
